Why do we get black circles and bags under our eyes?

I've always wondered about this. I just left the mens' room and while washing my hands I happened to look up into the mirror...and jumped back about two feet. Fugly dude staring back at me with these Raccoon-circles and little bags under his eyes.

Where do they come from and why? Edumacate (sic) me!

LOL, Czar! I ask a biology question and you try to sell me some Mary Kay Cosmetics! J/K Seriously, I look like crap. It would help if I got more than 4 hours sleep per night. AND I'm working another 18-hour day today. Hooray. Money's great, though.

I have always had those dark circles as well and wondered why lots of sleep has not helped much.

My daughter is 3 and gets good sleep and naps during the day, she has the same (not as dark) circles.

Everyone says "You can't deny her as your daughter".

bags=gravity/loss of elastin elasticity and collagen rigidity over time. it is just sagging skin.

color=?sunspot patterns develop due to an accumulation melanin (skin color pigment). this is also time/age related, though not dependent, of course.

btw these are guesses
