Why do we call it a "hamburger" -- why not call it a "beefburger"?

You know, I've always wondered this myself...

Maybe back in the olden days, ground beef was mixed with pig to give it flavor or something.

It came from Hamburg, duh. You'd think you'd wonder what a burger is, first.
Not really since 'burger' is an abbreviation of Hamburger, being something from Hamburg... They get called Beefburgers to avoid confusing people who don't enjoy pig-related produce.

a peanut is neither a pea nor a nut. discuss.

eh?

A peanut is a legume, just like a pea is.

ok. shrug. still isn't a pea...is it?

Hmm. I think it is. One of the definitions of a legume is "of the pea family".

Why do we drive on the parkway and park in the driveway? 😕

What exactly is "Semi-Boneless Ham?"

Why do we call them "Jumbo Shrimp?"

And burguer comes from burg, which in turn comes from borough. You would probably know this if you had any middle-age History classes. 😉

Why is it possible to "repeat" something, but you never "peat" it in the first place?

[Middle English repeten, from Old French repeter, from Latin repetere, to seek again : re-, re- + petere, to seek; see pet- in Indo-European Roots.]
