Why do we, as citizens, really need guns?

I'm really wondering why gun control is such a terrible thing, in light of all of the other things that are already prohibited by antiquated laws. For example, I don't believe that marijuana has actually hurt anyone yet it's illegal, but guns have the potential.

What are these reasons that we really (not law enforcement) *NEED* guns? Hunting? Protecting your family from intruders? If you do have a gun for protecting your family from intruders, have you ever been in the position that you've had to use it? Are there any other reasons I'm not thinking about?

Why are rights always on the defensive these against people who demand that we show a "need"?

Why do you need to be able to speak your mind? Why do you need to be able to go to your church/synagogue/temple/mosque/etc? Why do you need to be protected from unreasonable search if you're not doing anything wrong? The list goes on...

We can't solve all the world's problems by prohibitive legislation nor is it beneficial to try regardless of what politicians promise you to get themselves elected.

Sorry for offending you... It's a personal thing - I keep reading about these shootings, people killing family members.. And my wife's cousin has been recently diagnosed with schizophrenia (they live in Missouri and are a gun owning family). Her cousin was institutionalized after beating up her grandfather, for no reason, and was just released.. My thoughts have been consumed with "throw your guns away! NOW!" ever since he's been out, because "crazy mother f*cker" turns into a good, hard working family not existing anymore when guns are involved, to me.

Of course, people will find a way to kill if they want to, but body counts are much higher..

Aside from protection against the obvious zombie menace - hunting generally involves the use of a gun (yes, there is bow hunting season as well) but, frankly, the right to bear arms is engrained in the American psyche

Which according to some includes the two.

There's really no need for guns in society. Only the police or other law enforcement officers should carry them - and use them as sparingly as possible. A voice of reason goes a long way.

Why do we need cars that can do more than 25MPH?
Why do we need baseball bats?
Why do we need freedom of speech?
Why do we need TVs?

What I don't understand is that guns have the potential to limit the liberty of others. I think we'd have anarchy if we just said "fuck it, do as you will" and legalize everything. I agree that some legislation is trivial but I think it's ok to question both sides of the coin (from needlessly prohibitive to the other extreme).

The gun is a tool nothing more. I use it to hunt and in defense of my livestock and property.

Next time a predator is raiding my hen house, I should just roll over and let all of my chickens die because of all the people who were afraid of what I MIGHT do with my gun.

All of the anti-gun people are just in fear. and banning guns is just their over reaction to what they do not understand.

do you know people that smoke marijuana? even though it is illegal? what do you think will REALLY happen if guns are outlawed?

a world without violence is a great ideal, but it is naive to think you can make it happen.

There are worlds without violence. However, they happen to be uninhabited.

I understand that hunting is fun - I respect my middle-western inlaws and some of them are badass real MEN. Men who change their own oil and capture their own dinner. I respect that but, if the potential exists that a messed up family member can use this tool in a way that can destroy so much life then, well.. I just don't get it. Do we need to hunt? Not really. Grocery stores are awesome.

Anything I listed above has the same potential.

We've got millions of people literally eating themselves to death in this country and you're only concerned about the very small number that make headlines because a gun was involved. How about some legislation to make stores stop selling food that's bad for you? The god damned Hostess company kills more people than guns do. That's limiting my liberty by draining heath care resources, raising my taxes, and increasing what I pay for insurance.

I'm not offended.

But this is possibly the biggest R in the history of the internet.

yeah its nto like Man has not killed each other before guns were invented. not like we can't take a kitchen knife and do it as well. hell that NEVER happens.

Guns are perhaps the last margin of control the populace has over the gov't
