Why do vampire movies suck these days?

I went and saw Queen of the Damned the other night...horrible horrible movie. Then I got thinking that nearly every vampire/monster movie recently has sucked a lot. Last good vampire movie was Bram Stoker's dracula...Blade was OK but more action-oriented than horror. I liked Interview with a Vampire too. But lately it seems like most vampire movies are all about showing ridiculous amounts of blood and having horrible acting.

cause they are all, just like horror movies, just blood and stupidity. they lack the suspense factor that the older movies had.

Bram Stoker's was awesome, but your right most aren't great. They are ok action, not real vampire movies. I haven't seen Shadow of the Vampire yet, was that any good

the old school movies were great because they had good actors, interesting plots, and lots of suspense to really grab you. Bram Stoker's captured this because they had good actors like Anthony Hopkins and the plot was very intricate. Now its like movies just focus on big budget special effects...they're starting to look extremely generic.

The problem is now that with the advancements in movie making they show all the gore and flashy effects. What made a movie scary, IMO, was what you didn't see, or what you had to fill in with your mind. That's why Texas Chainsaw Massacre was considered so scary. The movie is touted as one of the most violent movies made, yet not one once of blood was shed on screen. All the killings and maimings where done out of sceen.

If we could get someone to write and direct a vamp movie like that, it would be awesome.

<< Hmm... My wife and her sister loved Queen of the Damned.

my gf did too...because she said the main character Les'tat was "incredibly sexy"

I have to agree the lately vampire movies have been pretty bad.

My three favorites in no particular order are:

Bram Stoker's Dracula
Shadow of the Vampire
Nadja

The last one's got an interesting twist on the whole Bram Stoker storyline, it's an indy flick (in a good way). Shadow of the Vampire was an interesting movie, it's definitely not one of those adrenaline movies, but interesting nonetheless.

Something about Anne Rice's stuff always bothered me. I've never even read more than half of the first book, but having seen Anne Rice having her write about such sexy stuff bothers me.

That's NOT why my wife liked it. She said it was a good movie.

Could it be that you're growing up, and in understanding there are no such things as monsters, witches, and hobgoblins, these movies no longer peak your interest?

At least...that's what did it for me.

Better then "OK". It's one of the few DVDs I've actually bought. But, I pretty much like anything with Snipes in it.

Yeah, Blade was great. I dislike a lot of Snipes movies, but his recent one's have been much better.

Yeah it was definitely entertaining...some classic one liners in there like "some mothafvkas are always tryin to ice skate uphill"

Isn't there a sequel coming out soon?

<< Vampires are a pain in the neck. >>

Thank-you for putting the last nail in that coffin.

And I promise to stop digging up such a grave subject.

🙂

If you care to bet, I'll put up stakes and wager my eye teeth you carry a silver cross and are a ward of the state. I feel pretty drained though and don't think I can bleed this for much more. All the good ones have pretty much seen the light of day. Poof!

Every1 in the theater was booing after this movie. It was so gay. I thought the 80s vamp movies rocked...Lost Boys and Fright Night!

There were homosexuals in the movie? Or was it that everybody was happy?

Well, it was written by Anne Rice, so there were probably some homosexual undertones. 😉

Isn't that every movie nowadays? Seriously, it seems that msot movies I have been to see in the last few years (with definite exceptions) are more about cramming the latest special effects down your throat, and having a plot just be the transition between special effects. I'm personally waiting for the next upsurge in movies; eventually some people in hollywood are going to realize whats going on and fix it.

Speaking of hollywood, what ever happened with the writers and the actors guild strikes? I haven't heard anything about either in about 6 months or so. If it's still going on, I could see why movies are sucking so much right now.
