Why do third person shooters still even exist?

It was a novel idea back in the day but this is 2010. I loved resident evil 1 & 2 but if only I could have played the successors in first person. Obviously the gameplay would have had to change some.
I can't tell you how many good titles I've had to pass on because I can't get past the clunky childishness that is third person mode.
Seriously, how much work would it take to make mass effect 1&2 as a first person shooter with third person support?
I really believe it's time for third person perspective to just die and if game developers don't atleast start adding first person support it only goes to show a lack of ingenuity thereof.

Flame on.

3rd person is childish? I could use many different adjectives to describe it, but having childlike qualities is certainly not one of them.

Does not give specific examples or reveal logic or reasoning behind statements, then covers ass by labeling any replies as flaming.

Troll? Or just stupid.

O IC this is the PC gaming section. Yeah 3rd person can be awkward with KB/M, try a controller. 3rd person works better for controller than first person IMO.

Maybe amateurish would have been a better term?
The point is that I have a difficult time taking the game seriously in third person.
As if the game were made for children.

Even more. Why would you play a shooter with a controller?
Shooters are all about speed and accuracy.

3rd person shooters exist because of the "clunky childishness" of first person shooters. In 1st person you can hide behind something and part of your character will be sticking out and you can't even tell until you are shot. It's easy to fall off ledges since you don't have as good a perspective as to where your character is in relation to other objects. Heck, you can't even see your own ****ing legs in most 1st person shooters. How much more childish and clunky could it get. ;)

I find most 3rd person controls clunky too. Part of the reason I can't get into mass effect.

This is because first person dosent even need a cover system, you simply hide behind somthing.

The developer's choice in point of view doesn't change whether the gameplay would require cover or not. Do you really believe this crap?

As long as there's a reticle to put over the target and then pull the trigger, 3rd person really isn't a problem.

Because a lot of these 3rd person games were designed for consoles.

This. The 3rd person prespective usually works better on consoles than on PC's. We get a lot of console ports on the PC which is why you're used to seeing them more often at this point.

I'm not a big fan of 3rd person either. I find it a little rash to implement 3rd person when the game is heavily geared towards action instead of puzzles or theatric scenery.

I hate 3rd person views as well. Like a racing game with a view from behind the car vs from the cockpit will feel like an arcade no matter how good the physics is. It's just a matter of immersion, with 3rd person it feels like I'm playing with puppets.
I can understand some people would prefer 3rd person, to each his/her own, but why not allow it as a configuration option? Is it so hard to reposition the camera view? Morrowind/Oblivion does it well. It's like developers worked hard on the graphic model of the main hero and they want you to be looking at it and admire it at all times...

Whoever mentioned Mass Effect, I'm on the same page, it was a major turnoff for me, and despite the better-than-average story, I never finished it...

It's probably done to give games a more cinematic feeling I would guess. Also games like GoW or Uncharted where you can dive around would be insanely nauseating if they tried to do it in first person. I don't really mind it, it offers a somewhat different play-style than 1st person.

I prefer playing racing games in a 3rd person type of view. I can see more of whats around me and i can see upcoming turns sooner than in 1st person.

I think an ingame option for either 3rd/1st person perspective would be pretty good. Only game that I can remember that featured this option is Thief 3, but there's got to be at least a handful more. If that option could be accomplished way back in 2004 (yeah, I had to look it up....lol), you'd think it could be offered moreso these days *shrugs*

Then again, I have no idea what it takes to 'make' a game these days........

Maybe you don't like it. I'm sure there's others out there that find it more appealing than a first person shooter. Opinions are like assholes you know...

It's a different style of play. Just play the style you enjoy, and let others do the same.

I disagree. Dead Space, Mass Effect, RE4/5, etc. all look great with the 3rd person view.

Mobility, in general, is easier is 3rd person. Never mind the cover systems - jumping, strafing without running into walls, nearly all of the non-shooting aspects work considerably better. Not to mention any non-shooting (ie, melee) combat that takes place, which never feels right in a FPS.

There's a bit of an accuracy loss, sure, but it's seldom a game breaker - third person games, as noted repeatedly, tend to be console-centric and thus very, very generous with the accuracy they expect.

So, why not just give me both? First person aim down the sights mode when I aim, and third person when I'm not?
