Why do they play music so damn loud at a bar?

I'm just trying to enjoy my drink and talk to my buddies but the damn sound system is so loud!! what gives!? how can anyone have some sort of conversation without screaming at the top of their lungs. The bartender can barely hear me. And the girls can hardly hear when i talk to them...."what's your name!?"...."huh!?"...."WHATS YOUR NAME!?!?!"..........

The more you yell, the more thirsty you get, the more drinks you'll buy, the more time you'll spend there trying to find out what people's names are.

Looks like someone was awake during marketing 101.

LOL 😀 I wonder if there's any truth to that... However, the fact that you can't hear anything without someone screaming into your ear (and thereby rupturing an eardrum) is the #1 reason why I don't go to clubs. It's just not my thing..

Let me tell you a little story. We (my roommates and I) had two huge parties in college:

Party #1 - we had the music very, very loud. Loud enough that you couldn't comfortably have a conversation. Party was a huge success, everyone got absolutely smashed, people were dancing and rubbing all over each other, it was a great time.

Party #2 - some jackass from upstairs insisted on making a scene about the noise. We offered him $40 to go away for the evening, and he wouldn't take it. We had to keep the volume level at a point where you could still have a conversation if you tried. Party was still a success, but instead of being an all out dancing/drinking adventure, we ended up with little pockets of people just hanging out and talking - ended up being more of a "night at your local pub" kind of event. Still a great time, but an entirely different sort of thing.

We discovered that loud music and cramming lots of people into a small space was the key to a good "dance" party. Oh, and the booze, obviously.

Exactly and it also reduces fighting.

Ya... i agree with party guy....

It's all about limiting your ability to interact in any meaningful way... Bars are for fun. {{period}}

It annoys the crap out of me unless I'm in the mood....

However, if you've ever been to a bar or club when it's quiet.. they are kind of depressing...

I prefer the music volume to be lower at parties, because I'm not really into dancing and I would rather goof around and laugh. When I dance, it looks like a full body dry heave.....not pretty :disgust:

I hate when the music is so loud... that's why I have a few select pubs that I regular at, and that's it.. I like to go to the bar so I can chat with people, not so I can YELL at people.. Karaoke is even worse... lol

As a substitute for finding yourself, bars offer the opportunity to try to forget yourself. Because the process is deadening, greater shock is required for things to regester al all.

There's probably a more scientific explanation. Most of the people who work in clubs/bars with loud music have already suffered some hearing loss, almost all people who play in loud bands have also. Because of this hearing loss, they may not realize how loud the music is....IMHO

If the club has an open door on the street, they'll blast music to entice peeps to go inside. There is a subliminal relationship between loud music and fun... So they try to get people hooked.... It can backfire though cause once they go inside, they want to leave. It's one of the many reasons you have to pay covers to get into those places. I would suggest finding a more laid-back bar or even complaining to the management and threatening them with a lawsuit because of hearing damage... (of course that would be a bit extreme)
