Why do they benchmark @ 1280x1024?

Ok, standard monitor resolutions are 4:3 like a TV. So 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 are all 4:3. So what is the deal w/ 1280x1024 which is 5:4? Are there monitors that use this ratio?

See above. LCDs are becoming very popular and most of them are set to 1280x1024 resolution, so this resolution is very important to many people out there with 17'', 18'' and 19'' LCDs.

Ok fair enough. Just seemed odd to benchmark at the rez, but if certain monitors use it as native it makes more sense now...

Perhaps. But it doesn't change the fact that games have been benchmarked at 1280*1024 FAR longer than the recent popularity of LCD displays. Perhaps it's just an accepted Windows display resolution over the years?

I know a lot of mates (all geeks mind you) use that res and above.

I personally use 1920x1440 for 2D.

I used that res on my 19" CRT for along time. I changed it to 1230 to 960 awhile ago. At first 1024'd smushed effect didn't bother me but it does now so thats why I went with 960. Not that big a difference in games though.

My 19" CRT doesn't even support 1280x960. If you select that in Windows, you still have 1280x1024. In fact, 1280x1024@100Hz is the manufacturer recommend resolution for my monitor.

How can you even see anything on the screen at that resolution? Talk about eye strain...

LOL

Well its 22" and my head is about 35cm away from it because of the way its positioned on my desk. 😛
No eye strain for me, its a damn good quality monitor.

I tell people to try the higher resolutions for a week. I don't know anyone that's gone back. I use 1600x1200 on 19" myself.

1280x1024 upper limit is a 17" panel IMO. 19" just looks too grainy. I had to "settle" for a 21.3" panel to get 1600x1200. I would be happy with a 17" (15 in a pinch) that did 16x12. No need for cleartype!

1920x1440 on a 19" is NOT eye-straining. Not even close.

Personally I don't understand how people can deal with the miniscule desktop real-estate of 1280 and below.

it's like the in between resolution going from 1024x768 to 1600x1200.
so if a gfx is good at 1024 but bad at 1600 you can see how much headroom is left (is the critical point between 1024 and 1280 or between 1280 and 1600? is it cpu dependant or is the gfx card at it's limits?). at least that is what i get out of it...

and this is coming from a guy running a geforce 3 on a 17" @1152x864 playing games at 800x600 :frown:

That 1280x1024 resolution makes no sense. It's like it was some kind of screw up in Windows drivers (like someone did the wrong aspect ratio and never bothered correcting it)-like systems used to have only 1280x1024 and not the correct 1280x960. And now we're stuck with it thanks to LCD monitors that use it 🙁

Thankfully it's not THAT distorted, but still it's annoying.

Damn i was wondering the same thing. Everything is all mooshed in at that resolution. its definitely all about 1600x1200.

I just use 1600x1200 on all my monitors for 2d. though some games run kinda slow at that res with AA enabled .. so sometimes i have to bring it down to 1280x960.

I still think all you high resolution people are on crack. (In 2D) on my 21" monitor I use 1280x960, and on my 19" I use 1152x864. I do usually bump up the resolution one notch in Mac OS X, just because it scales interface elements better than Windows, but for me anything higher than that is completly and utterly unusable.
