You mean I can't download a compatible binary or package installer from any site on the internet and install it on my Macbook? Wow, I had no idea. Guess I'd better uninstall all my freeware and warez.

(For the iPhone, you're dead on the money, btw. But don't get the two confused.)

Glad you picked up on that, I *was* talking exclusively about the iPhone.

For their desktop operating systems, I don't see why it would be so much of a worse option than the Windows equivalent for the average user if cost to run/own and ability to game wasn't a big deal.

WinDirStat
Non power users don't care. Disk Cleanup Wizard.
Adobe PDF Reader
XPS documents / Microsoft Document Imaging / TIFF
Non gamers don't use it.
GPU-Z/CPU-Z / Speccy
Non power users don't care. CPU type and model number is listed in Computer Properties.
iTunes/ Winamp / VLC / MPC
Windows Media Player - and I guess I'm outing myself, but I rather like WMP.
Burnaware, Nero, etc
Disc burning (iso or data cds) built into system. Burn audio CDs with Windows Media Player.
IE has a password keychain. Network volumes don't require a password to be reentered as long as they stay mounted.
Really? Non overclockers don't care. Hell, a lot of overclockers don't care.
You can download files using Internet Explorer. Including warez.
ImgResizer
Paint resizes images. Does a few other things too. Very few people outside of web designers need a lot of image compression and manipulation tools.
I'll see your audio editing, and raise you Windows Movie Maker.
Zip functionality built into OS.
Gimp / Paint.Net
MS Paint
All of PiriForms offerings
Maintenance Utility (Defrag, directory repair, etc.) are built into system.
Skydrive

What they really should add is something like iPhoto.

Some drama was made about the new Gatekeeper feature in 10.8, along with the App Store push, but IMO if you can't figure out how to turn that off, you shouldn't be installing unsigned apps anyway.

remember when windows didn't come with an unzip program and you'd backup your stuff into zip files then blow your 1 and only machine away? OOPS.
