larger is almost always cool or cold from the fridge or tap (larger = coors, fosters, bud, etc etc)

beer (john smiths etc) or ale is usually warm, because it tastes better that way.

You would not want to drink a John Smiths

Fixed.

LOL :D I used to drink it quite a lot at uni but maybe that's because it was the cheapest drink there....

Exactly. Sure, they do a good piece of beef, but I'm struggling to think of American meals that I would consider decent.

Because of the amount of beer Brits consume the cost to refrigerate it all to 50° F would be cost prohibitive.

It's obviously a social convention designed to protect their limited resources.

Aw c'mon .... this is the lead in line for a joke!

Q: Why do the British drink warm beer?

A: Lucas refridgerators!

(If you ever had to work on an older British car (ala Triumph ~Tr3 for example), you get the joke)

Usually in the same train of jokes: "Lucas, God of Darkness"

FWIW

Don't they drink it at the same temp as we do here?

Light, pale beer = cold
Dark, heavy beer = warmer?

Drinking beer at room temp (or more importantly, the willingness to) is simply the acid test for good beer. Next to my own, I prefer Tadcaster Porter and am happy to quaff it at any temp. Life is to short to drink bad beer even if someone else pays for it. Most American beers with the exception of some micro-breweries aren't worth the trouble to bottle or (shudder) can them. Go out and investigate your local brew supply shop and try making your own. After a short while, I guarrantee you'll start truly enjoying beer at room temp or chilled.

Where in the UK were you served room-temperature beer? Every bar/club I ever went to in London and various towns in Scotland served the beer cold, just like in the US.
