Why do suits and wool coats always have their outer pockets sewn closed?

it's kinda annoying since you either have no open pockets or have to cut them open.

I'm thinking, probably to ensure the form of the jacket stays uniform during shipping and on display. I'm weird, I kind of enjoy removing the stitches on the pockets on a new coat.

I've always been curious about this as well, and CptObvious' guess is about all I've ever come up with.

where are you guys buying coats from???

i've never seen this before.

I can't afford good ones and mine are always sewn up:(

by this comment i'm assuming that its only crappy/inexpensive coats that come like this?

my coats ren't expensive, at least i don't think so, and none have ever had sewn pockets that i had to cut.

edit: oh wait a minute. i totally misread the thread somehow. i've never owned a wool coat. i've owned one suit that was as cheap as could be (was in HS at the time). don't remember anything being sewn together though.

Perhaps to ensure that you are getting a (somewhat) new product and also provides stores something else to look for when merchandise is returned.

This is correct, they keep them closed because its rare for anyone to use them... plus it keeps the suit looking nice and the pockets not look stretched out from use.

Some companies have their label stitched on the outer right sleeve.

I don't know, I thought it was fairly common to remove the stitches on the pockets. One benefit is that you can tuck the pocket flap in for a more formal look on certain occasions.

Okay, I guess I can understand that in a suit, but what about wool coats? Both of mine (expensive dress coat and cheaper casual) have their pockets sewn also. I think pockets on a coat are very useful, they give you somewhere to put your keys, gloves, and hands (when its cold).

CptObvious gave you your answer in the 2nd reply, it's so they look better while on display.

Most tailors will recommend leaving besom (i.e., flapless) pockets sewn shut on sport coats and suit jackets. I have several Armani Collezioni jackets with besom pockets - he has stayed with them although most designers use flaps now - and I still always cut 'em open even though I never use them. Form follows function!
