I'm looking for some stands for my surround sound speakers. The prices for these things are crazy? 60,70,80 bux for a cheesy stand? I think I will go to Home Depot and make one for 10 bucks.

I got some cheaply at RadioShack a few years ago. But you're right, they seem way too expensive for what you are getting.

It's really just basic capitalism at work:

They got 'em, you want 'em. Bend Over.

My rear speakers are about 2 feet tall and weigh about 40 lbs. I don't think those stands are for me. I've got them on some cabinets now, but I'm going to make some heavy duty stands.

go pick up a par of black metal adjustable stands from Ikea for 40 bucks.

The DIY stands in that article look like crap in my opinion. Pay an extra 20 bucks, save time, and have professionaly made. Otherwise, why bother even making that crap? Go buy some cylinder blocks turn them vertically and you're set. They are heavy, reduce unnecessary vibrations, cheap, and just as ugly as the DIY recipe.

i got my speaker stands at Big Lots for 14.99, plus an extra 15% off w/ employee discount. :D they're particle board, but who the hell cares, they're painted black. and they have never fallen over or anything like that, so obviously they work fine.

if i hadn't found these so cheap, i woulda made some. i agree, it's a few planks of wood. if you've got a table saw, save yourself 50 bucks and make them yourself. all you need is a table saw, drill, screws, wood, and a screw driver. not too hard.

normally i wouldn't speak of QVC, but there were a few posts in the hot deals forum recently where you could get a pair of decent speakers stands for around 30 dollars shipped. Might want to check if that's still available or not, unless you're really interested in making your own. if so, good luck and post results!

Those home made ones would look nice painted flat black. They should be a little taller for rears though. I would probably fill them with sand and make the bases bigger, but they would weigh a ton.

I just brought two set of speaker stand for around $50. There was a thread about this few weeks back. After Anandtech Forum update their software, this thread disappeared. You can still find the source of this thread from FatWallet.

Here is another thread at the same subject in AT. Check here.

Good luck!!
