WHY do some states make you have two license plates...one for the front and one for the back?

Here in Vancouver we are required to have 2 license plates too.... And you will get a ticket if you dont have both...

I took my front one off a couple of years ago, just becuz I think it looks better... and a cop pulled me over during a road block and gave me a warning (I only got a warning becuz I lied and told him it fell off, or else it's a ticket for sure)....
 
I would think it is just to indentify autos easier.

Why would it equate to more money? I'm sure auto plates arent a huge money maker for a state government.

That being said, our state only requires a rear plate, and every time we go to Texas (2plates) the cops always make a huge quick U-turn to get behind us and pull us over, till they see we are just stupid tourists from OKlahoma. 😱

Why??? If it were a "police" matter, then every state would require it...that's to say if it were to be of any benefit.
 
In Cali they finally made it more then a "fix it ticket" b/c of the traffic light cameras they have. Nobody in my family sported a front plate until sometime last year when I got a ticket for not having one. That said, they look ghey.
 
Its a standard in Europe I think, at least in all the countries i'v been to.

one very practical use for are the red light cameras or whatever they are called, that take a picture of the car when you cross a red light.

We have red light cameras too, but they shoot your rear license plate.


So i'm still not seeing a benefit...

Yea, the camera takes the pic from behind the car if i remember correctly.
 
Law enforcement is probably easier with 2 plates. Personally, I'd rather the cops be able to identify the bad guy's car from the front OR the back.
 
We need two up here in New York, but plenty of people only put the rear one on their cars. I've passed by cops hundreds of times without a front plate and never been stopped for it.
 
It is for law enforcement purposes. Though most of the time they will ID from the rear one, when they are looking for a car (warrent or another matter) they have to see whats coming at them as well. Its very difficult to read a plate in the mirror of the car. It may not look pretty, but believe me, it helps your local law enforcement out a ton.

strange, because then you dont see the driver and I think that is reqired for it to be valid I think.

 
You have heard wrong. It bounces off the body of the vehical and really has nothing to do with plates.
 
A car moves forward and backward... for proper identification, it's on the front and back. If cars moved sidways, the law would probably require one on all four sides...

OmegaNauce points out the obvious. License plates are for identification, especially for law enforcement. Placing them front and rear makes it easier to ID a car from more points of view.
 
I HATE front liscense plates. One of the few good things about Floriduh along with Concealed Weapons Carry Permits!

But if it's for an identification purpose, then why don't ALL states require you to have them...that would make the most sense.
