Why do some public toilets have a U-shaped seat?

Just came back from a bathroom break at work and it occurred to me that I have no idea why some public toilet seats are U-shaped (as the toilet seat in my office's bathroom is), whereas most homes have an O-shaped toilet seat without a gap in the front.

I await the unveiling of the answer to this timeless question....

i suspect that when u sit down, your 'member' won't touch the seat's outtermost edge if it's U shaped. if it's a full circle, like what you have at home, you tend to 'touch' the edge, if you know what i mean.

Public toilets don't use a tank based system, instead they have the metal pipe thingy behind the seat. So if you lift the lid up, it needs that gap there or the metal thing can't fit through. That's my theory anyways

2 reasons come to the top of my head. First, so you don't urinate on the seat - whether sitting down or standing up but were too lazy to put the seat down. The second reason is one of my most dreaded bathroom problems. I hate it when I'm not paying much attention and I feel the cold (filthy poo and pee covered) porcelain touching my hanging...

Yet the top of the bowl is right there when the seat is down. And most people's members touch the bowl, not the seat.

I highly doubt the design has anything to do with penises.

While the oval shape, over sized toilets were created as an answer to members touching the bowl, I do not believe the gapped seat has anything to do with it.

The u-shaped ones are so that you don't have to lift the seat to pee. The o-shaped ones are so that you *do* have to lift the seat to pee. Do you think it is a coincidence that one is used in public and one is used in homes?

I'm of average height with smaller than average hips. I have to 'stuff' my equipment through the small gap afforded on your average O shaped bowl. Or I'd have to shift my seating back towards the tank and then slide forward. (I can't remain there, I'd be pooping on the seat in that position) The split in the front of the U shaped toliets makes it much easier to get my junk in there, and I'm glad its there; I don't want my precious penis touching the disgusting probably-AIDS infected public toliet seat. The inside of the bowl is even more disgusting, and you are right in that the oversized bowl helps avoid the dreaded 'inner bowl wang contact' but if you think the gap of the U seat doesn't afford a similar benefit regarding the seat itself, you're crazy.

I think that design has EVERYTHING to do with penises. From preventing dribbled urine on the most common part of the seat to preventing penis contact with any part of the toliet.

Related: Has anyone used one of those toliet where the bowl is so low/the water is so high that you think that if you shifted your weight just right you'd probably end up putting your stuff in the water? God I hate those.
