Haha, same thing happened to my dad... He was out looking at property and there was an open house, he shows up in an old LS400 while there are fancy mercedes, bmws and landrovers etc. parked out front. He is wearing is usual sweater and when he goes to ask the price of the house, the sales agent acts very rude towards him and wouldn't tell him anything. After letting her know that he owned a property just up the street, her sneer turned into happiness and was 'delighted' to help him. After that he left as he didn't want to deal with such a shallow person such as that sales woman. It's pretty funny when you see people do that but at the same time it's sad how pathetic people can be as well.
That's a pretty stupid reason not to do business with someone. Real estate agents who host open houses get peple who have no intention of buying a home come in and waste everyone's time.

That's like driving to the Ferrarri dealership in a 88 Honda Civic with sweat pants and wondering why nobody is helping you.
Societal norms may suck, but they are what they are. If you want to play; play by the rules.

Well, I don't see anything wrong with a sweater and an old 50k+ car.

I'd say its more like showing up at a BMW dealership in a corolla or civic.

EDIT: OF course I don't know if it was a raggedy old sweater and old 1990 econobox ls400 and a 10 million dollar house.

No the sweater I'm sure wasn't raggedy and the LS400 couldn't possibly have been an econobox. It was a '94 model.

There you have it. And YOU, OP, and all the shallow asshole salespeople who are nothing more than middle class millionaire wannabe's can kiss our collective asses.

An old SO of mine was social register rich. She was descended from the Lippincott's and the Wharton -- she had 14 million and her parent's had several hundred million.

We went to eat at their estate and I got to see their vehicles. They owned a old Chevy pickup for the farm duties and an old slant 6 Dodge Dart four door sedan, not even the top trim model of same.

People with money who are not the asshole noveau riche, i.e., who are comfortable in their own skins, don't give one good goddamn what twerps like you, OP, or other shallow wannabes think.

They wear what they want when they want, and the old line rich do not generally ever put their money into cars -- they consider this vulgar -- but rather spend what money they spend on their estates, although also never in a showy, vulgar way.

Now, yacht salesman have LONG known this, and would never turn away a no socks wearing, courduroy pants guy, as they KNOW how the old line rich habitually dress.

Many, many noveau riche (I can't help but think of large swatches of New Jersey when I think of same) have more newly acquired money than taste, are still the same vulgar and insecure assholes they were before acquiring some money by being relentless assholes, and so NEED to impress other shallow asswipes like the OP with their bling -- which, apparently, is the only metric of supposed personal worth that these twerps understand.

OP, hope this was helpful.

heh you would be amazed.

my father used to own a few car dealerships.he is also friends with many other car dealers. All of them have a few million in the bank. you would not be able to tell that any one of them are rich.

One of my dad's old business partners would always wear jeans and a nice shirt. Drove a F150 in the summer and had a Volvo wagon (one of the fast ones not sure which). looking at him you would not know he was very rich.

No, no, no, you understand, your nine word answer completely captures the crux of this situation.

By OP, I meant -- yup, that's right -- the original poster in this thread, ie, the clueless pup who started this convo.

Edit for your edit: "prepositional phrase cross fire" <---- I like your way with words!

We should really ask why are some salespeople shallow asshole? This especially applies to a great number of car salespeople.

I was shopping for a new car many years ago. I work as a software developer so you can imagine what I wear to work. I go into a Volkswagen dealer. No other people in the show room. Can't even get a salesperson to talk to me. I then go to an Acura dealer. Guy comes right up to me and is very helpful. He gives me the keys to a demo and tells me to have it back by the time the dealer closes. I ended up buying the Acura.

I got what you meant by OP, but then you started listing others with commas and "you" was in there and I happened to be the one you quoted.
I'm sure you can see where some confusion can arrise.
Damn english language!

Ahhh, I see. Had I meant to include you, I would have said, "YOU, the OP,and . . .", but I do see that my construction was ambiguous at best.

It could have been phrased better or it could have been phrased worse, the confusion mainly stems from the flexibility that the english language allows the author. It was certainly a lot better than 90% of how this forum writes. :Q
I just wanted to make sure you weren't lumping me in with the rest of these devils.

Cheers to you sir. :)

Hmmm...does it matter to the discussion at all that he was looking at a car that starts over $50k?

Not in the least. I have 'blue jeans and t-shirt' friends who will go in, find a salesman and a deal they like, and write a personal check for the whole thing. The good salesman will not bat an eye or look down his nose at ANYBODY, period. It takes no effort at all to show class, compassion and repect to everybody, but not doing so is petty and can cost you.

I have seen that but have you seen what kind of watch they wear or what kind of pen they got in thier pocket? I knew a couple people who where a jeans and shirt type of people. You wouldn't think they had any money until you saw their 5,000 dollar beater watch.

All the rich people I know are old. They have no one to impress in their private lives and are way past the courting age.

A rapper much wiser than 50 Cent or The Game said it best, "Fvck the floss, I'm the boss when I rock flip-flops."
