Why do some LCD's have ANALOG and DIGITAL outpus?

I was looking behind my uncle's dell 17" LCD screen and found out that he has two outputs.

He has an Analog and a Digital... It's actually very useful if you want to multitask and have two monitors... but i was wondering.. does digital have higher bandwith or something? Is that why they made one analog and the other digital?

does digital give a better clarity?

You probably mean input. The DVI-D input makes the image more clear and higher quality. If you're talking about the video card, then it'd probably be video output.

i think that analog can achieve like higher resolutions on certain ones but the digital provides the best signal

That is because some video cards do not have digital outputs. My LCD has both - I have tried both - the resolution and clarity are much better in digital. My Radeon has both as well. But, there are older cards that are analog only - hence the two ports on the LCD.

Analog cannot possibly provide higher resolution. The digital connector can allow pixel-perfect native resolution (each LCD transistor/pixel is used).

What I don't get why they even make analog only monitors even now. It's really stupid since there are always horrible problems with image quality in analog mode, even if you have a good video card which is so rare. For example, practically no integrated video would produce an acceptable image on analog LCD. Stupidity everywhere.

To the non-techie videophile analog LCD's are fine.

Most Joe Hickhocks out there in the market for an LCD dont want to spend a lot of money... they see a cheap one at an electronics outlet and grab it without a second thought. Joe Hickhocks Dell P3 probably only has normal SVGA output and for LCD manufacturers it is in fact cheaper to build a monitor with an A/D converter than one with DVI only. Why? Economies of scale... all those budget LCDs targeted at all the Joes out there all need an AD converter so ADs are produced in much higher volumes than DVI interface chips. I know this for a fact cause I used to work for a low tier monitor company and during the briefing about the launch of a new budget LCD lineup I asked almost the exact same question. The engineer present was fortunately able to give me a precise answer without any marketing gobbledigook, having just come back from the OEM manufacturer in china.
