I have Labtec Pulses where the transformer block is built into the sub (says the manual) and another device (printer or scanner I think) which has the transformer block halfway between the plugs. These designs help out a lot when youve got a lot of devices hooked up so why dont more manufacturers use them? why do we need adapters anyway? change the type of current or something?

Transformer "transform" the properties of the electrical current.
Raise/Lower Voltage, Raise/Lower Current and they can flip between AC and DC.
Your average wall outlet (in North America) is 115V, AC.
Your printer probably needs about 12V DC.
As for where it is...doesn't really matter.
It can be attached to the prongs (big block plug), it can be in the middle of the cable, or it can be built right into the device.
It serves the same purpose regardless of placement.

The problem with transformers is that they are physically very large (comparatively speaking). There are other ways of converting voltage, but they are all much more expensive than the tried and true transformer.
Putting that large thing in a small printer would require redesigning the printer case. Since mfr's can buy these transformers from a second company either inline, or as wall-warts, it simplifies their production and probably lowers costs over putting the transformer inside the device.

is the "inbetween" method that much more costly tho? well... hrmm.. i guess it would be having to add another wire into the packaging.

not really. The inbetween I have looks like the manufacturer just "slid" the block halfway down the wire so it not 2 wires that are plugged into the transformer, rather the transformer is built into 1 wire. Thanks for the info guys
