Why do so many who identify as Atheists support Big Government?

I'm kind of curious to this. I am not religious at all, I don't identify with Atheism or Atheists due to my believing it is just another religion. Though I was thinking. Why do they want to substitute so hard the "fake" God for one of their own creation? Some giant entity that is all powerful and will take care of everything, yet will be constructed of man? Please... Silly mortals.

Atheists are not suckered by promises of afterlife, so we want to build a better society here on earth.

only they feel extremely alienated by social conservatives

there are plenty of Atheists that identify as Libertarians

99% of what is going on in terms of social conservatism is aimed at giving choices to states.

I really don't get why anyone would be against letting states choose their own path, be it universal health care, medical marijuana, or what constitutes a marriage.

The states have a shitty record when allowed to "choose their own path". Slavery and segregation for example.

BTW, you know that it's conservatives who wanted the federal government to ban states from allowing gay marriage with a constitutional amendment right? And it's conservatives who passed DOMA. And it's conservatives who oppose allowing states to legalize marijuana. You need to work on your examples.
 
You managed to stuff an incredible amount of stupidity in very few words, I'll give you props for that.

First, at the very root, religious people believe God is some kind of conciousness that has a personal relationship with you. How does skepticism of outrageous unsubstantiated claims translate into a religion?

Second, some of us don't share this idea of government being a giant, powerful unaccountable entity - it is merely the enforcer of rules we've all chosen to live by. If, being freed from the oppression of struggling to attain an afterlife, I want to see our environment left in a sustainable state, I'll want the rules put in place to protect the environment and have them enforced. How does that conflict with my skepticism of outrageous claims?

Do you believe in God? If the answer is "no," then you're an atheist. You can use whatever label you like, but a-theism means not or without theism. It is not a belief. It is the absence of one. That is all.

You probably don't believe in flying spaghetti monsters either. Because there isn't widespread belief in flying spaghetti monsters, no word such as "aflyingspaghettimonsterism" has arisen to describe its absence. Still, it's the same concept. It isn't a belief but rather the absence of one.

DOMA is a federal statute, as are federal maijuana laws, so no, that isn't true as a generalization. But even where it is, such as a proposed amendment to ban abortion, it doesn't say much for the GOP as a states rights party when they want to expand the Constitution to limit the rights of states.

They should all be state issues unless the built in mechanism (a constitutional amendment) is pass - a process which requires votes by each state.

As for DOMA, it enables the right of each state to regulate its marriage licensing process. There should be no implications at the federal level because marriage should be irrelevant at the federal level.

Frankly I couldn't give 2 shits about which established political party is doing it.
It all comes down to philosophy, the "progressive" philosophy and the conservative philosophy. Some people in both parties go between the two.

I really don't get why anyone outside of Washington D.C. would be for a monolithic federal government.
 
Because God is dead. People are over it. The future and salvation of mankind lay with the State. Without a state, what are the people? They're not even a people.

I have no clue either, but you're going to have to come up with a better come back than that because I don't identify with any group or ideology.

Martin, how is it any different? Both are constructs of mans imagination. We create the government and seek it's aid why? Because it is the big powerful entity. Why do we talk crap about corporations in one breath and then talk about saving the people in the next? They are the same thing.


BTW I never said all, I said why do so many. If you identify as an Atheist and don't follow big government principles it really doesn't apply to you then does it? Also, as I said I am not religious. I prescribe to no religious doctrine and I do believe Atheism has become a religion over the years. You can argue otherwise, but you'll just sound like a moron.
