why do so many people seem to hate/dislike California

I don't mind California but I have a few reasons why I wouldn't live there.

1) Traffic - Long delays. Many cities in California make Boston's rush hour look like it's nothing. Many Californians aren't the best in rain and god forbid if it snowed.

2) Nature - I wouldn't miss winter but I wouldn't enjoy 100 degree days either. Many areas have earthquake risks, wildfires, and mudslides.

3) Cost of living - A house that goes for $60K here goes for $600k in California. To get it down to maybe 200k you have to live so far from a city that it would take 2+ hours to get to work every day. Groceries, gas, and many other things are also more expensive. I pay $2.099 here for a gallon of gas and I paid $1.969 last week in Chicopee, Ma.

4) People - There are more than the usual amount of rude, intolerant, and mean people out there.

any idiot who chooses to live in an area prone to power outages, floods, mud slides, earthquakes, forest fires, poor driving skills, low speed car chases, people who only speak mexican, and an affinity for scientology (forgive the spelling) deserves to be placed in California (kinda like the U.S.'s own Botony Bay)

Point of fact, the only thing good that comes from California that I know of is Silicon (in two_flavors)

The best thing about California is there are no Texans there. You also probably wouldn't like it because bad Hygiene is frowned upon by Californians

i agree its jealousy and because of it so many stereotypes have been formed about california that everyone believes them. unless you have lived here for 10+ years then you haven't a clue.

That's ignorance. Not jealousy.

what? its a huge state, most places traffics probably no worse then any other states cities.

only some areas have lots of hot days. in the bay area atleast there weren't many 100 degree days this past year... and in coastal places like san fran its just not that hot at all. as for snow, i can see snow in 4 hours drive if i feel the need. less if i don't feel the need to ski. as for earthquakes.. last big one was what? years and years ago, and it didn't do all that much really. look at florida and the huricanes every year.. and other states get those nice floods and tornados, ice storms etc that aren't rare at all, in fact they happen all the time. mudslides? wtf are u talking about. as for wild fires, they happen in the wild, where most people don't live. and where are there no wildfires anyways.

4) People - There are more than the usual amount of rude, intolerant, and mean people out there.

where the f*ck did u get this? the stereotype is that ny people are rude. not cali. and if u think we are, atleast we are up front about it. in the south you backstab people with a smile on your face.

as for the guy that mentioned scientology, wtf? is it a major religion in cali? what planet are you from that you think this? and u better not be from the south(aka jesus land/cult central). gotta love religious hipocrisy. oh that guys unscientific fantasy beliefs are nuts, but mine aren't😛

you have no idea what you are talking about.

since 0roo0roo missed #3, ill say something - nobody is forcing you to work in the bay area or LA.

Seems like the folks in California generally have an open mind, and are open to change. The bible-belt states population generally don't like change. People who disagree on things sometimes don't like each other. I have lived near or worked in Chicago my entire life, and the folks around here don't have any ill feelings toward California, other than they don't have winter there :|

You do realize that Chicago and the burbs are rather heavily Democratic, right?

Dupage county is a republican stronghold...right outside Chicago too 🙂

well what he doesn't want to say is that it costs that much because of demand. people want to live here. and well its because we're capitalists, supply..demand? how liberal!! oh the socialist system here is a little odd don't you say? most of the complainers just couldn't cut it here😛

California has always fascinated me. I would love to visit, though I could never afford to live there. I also love FL which a lot of people have negative things to say about as well. Oh well, you can't please everybody.

I don't hate CA, but I'd never live there. For starters, I'm a car enthusiast and they have some crazy auto laws.

California and New York are the two most important states in our country, bar none.

When you people describe California as hippie land I chuckle. The reason most of us are so open and accepting is because we have to be that way. When your in Socal, just take a look around yourself. You'll probably see a bunch of asians, a bunch of mexicans, maybe some blacks, and possibly some whites. You just can't get by without knowing or interacting with someone of a different race. As a result we have much less intolerance and hatred because we simply can't afford to hate others. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist here, it does, but intolerance for other cultures just isn't as prevalent.

And where the fvck do you get the stereotype that people in the midwest are backstabbers? I've never even heard that one before this thread.

As for myself, I don't really know much about California overall. Visited many years ago and don't really have any desire to live there.

lot of people I have talked seem to feel that way.I also get this impression from quite a few threads/posts on here

is it the prices? (i for one think its worth it, given what the state has to offer, but that is just me)

I think it is because of ignorance. That and the crazy extremists here who speak for about 1% of all Californians but seem to get 99% of the news/press coverage.

you've never heard of the flipside of "southern hospitality"?

first google result for southern hospitality and deceptive

However, Southern hospitality can be deceptive, says Szulik. He's lived in Raleigh 10 years. People are outwardly friendly, but he can still feel like an outsider. Szulik says no one knows what to make of his immigrant name or his Boston accent. "I don't get invited to all the parties," despite having acquired affection for grits, sweet iced tea and NASCAR, Szulik says.

OK... but that is one guy saying he doesn't feel he has been fully accepted into his new community and that has nothing to do with "back stabbing".

well thats the stereotype... that example is rather gentle being that its used in a business cultural context.

I dont really have any idea where Moore lives. However, there are a lot of jerks like him who live there. I dont need some stupid rish celebrity telling my America is bad and we should all become communists.
