why do so many people here drive manual transmission cars...

maybe you should put some real reasons in your poll, such as

can get better gas mileage
usually a manual tranny lasts longer than an auto
that was what was available
i drive a sports car, no auto bs for me!

i'm #4 in that list

i think if 100 people on atot say they drive a manual:

40% of them are lying
20% of them snobs
20% are actual enthusiasts
20% dont know any better - include european/asian drivers in here

Maybe because people who post here are more technologically and mechanically inclined and therefore know that automatics suck?

Over the years 80% of my vehicles have been manuals. I just prefer them.

I currently have one manual (VW Bus) and one auto (Volvo) because my wife's hands can't handle sticks anymore.

/me sits back and waits for the prepubescent jokes

Agreed.

Manual transmission cars accelerate better, have a slightly better top speed, and get better mileage.

Over here, if you can't drive a manual, you suck at life.

Those facts are not always true.

Fine.

The vast majority of the time, manual transmissions are faster (etc) than autos.

I doubt the % is any higher in here than genpop. Its just that car people post in car threads and non-car people don't atleast as much and car people are more likely to drive a manual.

Why do people build computers instead of buying a Dell?

1) Because they like doing things the hard way
2) They want to get better performance at the cost of convenience
3) They can get more performance usually for less
4) They like to brag about the things above

Same thing for manual transmission drivers.

Manual transmission, if ever there was something so undeserving of the elitist attitude that goes along with it, it would be this.

the most important reason...chicks dig a guy who can handle a 'stick' and conversely, guys
dig a chick that can handle a stick too...for example - 5-speed girl 😉

Driving an auto is seriously dull. You can get a much more interesting drive in a manual. There's nothing like shifting down before a corner into the power band and pulling through it....

Having said that, most US cars weigh in at well over a tonne, and this is before the driver gets in. Also, since the roads are laid out like grids, and all racing is done in straight lines, I can kind of see where they're coming from. In truth, the roads are dull in the US (not to mention badly maintained - eg san fran), so the cars are built to match.

Anyway.... who would want to put their bigmac down in order to change gear?

*ducks*
