There is too much govt regulation of trade and there always has been... whatever comes in at the borders must be first approved by the govt's harmonized tariff schedule.

Why should anyone ever be prohibited/restricted from buying direct? I know the restrictions may be for the public safety, but they can also hurt the public safety. I know that it jacks wages up for some, but govt regulation of trade also creates too much waste via the creation of too many middle men.

If govt can regulate trade, then that doesn't even mean that a favorable balance of trade will occur (if trade deficits/surpluses even matter)... in fact, too many regulations is probably why american products are overpriced and lousy.

I support blocking most of the foreign cars coming into the country. If our country had half a brain we would block chinese imports.

Yeah, you'd have to be missing half your brain to support such foolishness.

Stop right there. The OP is all for free market. If China can produce product at a fraction of the cost by paying their employess a few dollars a day, the US should follow suit to remain competitive.

Now, here's your two dollars and live well for the rest of the day.

Just another excuse to open up the flood gates further to cheap imported crap from nations that manipulate it's currency and then conviently blame the lack of jobs on Corporations shipping jobs overseas.

Anarchist, you are mixing 2 points into one here.

1. Why do we have trade regulations?

2. Why do we regulate our private market?

I think I can answer part of your question in the following manner.

"free market" means free competition ie all entities compete equally in the market, not "free to do what ever I want in order to compete and win", and you seem to be indicating that you would support the latter.

Funny, I just had my annual Export Control training.

I know why. You never will unless you get out of the house.

The U.S. govt is guilty of the same things China is... just because we have a slightly stronger currency and have labor laws doesn't mean that our govt doesn't use dirty tricks to promote American manufacturing.

Further, the Fed has favored manufacturing since a good portion of the zero interest loans they've made have gone to american manufacturing.

Finally, due to the fact that the dollar is stronger, Americans (and certainly people with say, something like Swiss Francs) can just buy out the Chinese companies or at least buy a $hitload of stock in them and make all the decisions. In other words, Americans could manipulate the fuck out of Chinese companies if China's currency really is so weak... Americans just choose not to. All of that said, people seem to be forgetting the advantages of not having a world currency or only two currencies (like the Chinese currency and an American currency).
