Why do so many on here create fantasy lives for themselves?

Seems like the more I spend here, the more I come across people who spend countless months fabricating false lives for themselves. So many slip up and eventually get called on it. Then, they either apologize and vow never to post here again, or claim their account was 'hacked.'

Honestly, what drives an individual to do this? Who are these people?
