The problems are many. For one, the laziness of a lot of individuals. 🙂
Genetics *do* play a role; however, they play more of a role in where and how body fat is stored than determining how "easy" or "hard" it is to lose it once you gain it.
I'd say the biggest problem is the "fad" diets and the gimmicks out there. Not to mention the laughable misinformation coming from the government. The high-carb, low-fat diets promoted heavily today are actually making people fatter and more prone to diabetes and other serious health risks.
I've went from an all-time high of 274lbs. about 2 years ago down to 180lbs. now. I haven't starved myself, I'm not going keto-crazy on Atkins, and I'm not spending hours in the gym or anything like that. I watch my diet as best I can (I do cheat, of course 😀) and lift weights twice a week (more or less a full-body workout). I don't spend hundreds of dollars on gimmick supplements or magic potions to gain muscle. All it requires is some time, motivation, and honest-to-goodness willpower. If you don't want a lifestyle change (thinking of it as a "diet" is a mistake as well) then you are wasting your time. Only you can make positive changes and they've got to be because you want them -- not to impress the hot blonde you've been courting or because your gal pal mentions your love handles in an unfavorable light 🙂
