better for them to smoke every 30min, than to have 50 people in the break room at the same time...yuk

start smoking , at least as long as you work there, if you can't beat them, join them 🙂

Thanks but no thanks. I like my lungs 😀

Same here. But I consider my job a break anyways...

A few years ago when I was working with a friend and he went to take a smoke break I went out side with him. I kept track of how many times we went outside.. I think it was about 12 times in 8 hours.. Some times for 10 minutes and even a few 20 minute ones. And if another smoker ws out there then it might even be longer. I don't care though, I spend at least 5 hours on the net anyways.

Let me smoke at my desk again and I won't leave to got have a cigarette! Besides, at least in my job, my boss and I get a lot done/discussed while smoking outside.

You guys are dodging the point here... Im not saying i dont not do work from time to time... But why is it ok for them to get up, stop all work, and leave for 10 minues to go smoke 2 times an hour??
Because whiners like you made it impossible for them to smoke indoors.

I think he means, why does he get yelled at for "taking a break" whilst if a smoker was to take a break to smoke it's ok?

I dunno, I think that's what he means.

Thats exactally what i mean.

The same reason why it's completely acceptable for workers who have small children to leave early and/or come in late, while if you have no kids it's completely frowned upon. (In other words, if you're single without kids, you're expected to devote your life to your job.) It's somehow ingrained into society. It's wrong, in my opinion, but that's the way it is.

Where I worked last summer, a few of the people smoked and took the breaks like you're talking about. Every hour or so, they'd go out for about 5 minutes (they didn't take any more time than it took to smoke the cigarette, I don't think). The way I saw it, I could go and get a drink of water or whatnot.

Can you provide me proof and extensive medical research to back up that comment?

Didn't think so.

Beside the point, what gives you the right to make me have to breathe that crap in?

EDIT: The EPA seems to think it does. Anyway, since we KNOW it causes it in people who smoke it. Why wouldnt it it cause it in everyone else who breathes it in?

aphexII,
I didn't ask that question or opinion. I asked if you can provide proof that secondhand smoke will give you lung cancer. While you're at it see if you can find proof that I will contract cancer from my smoking.

I wouldn't be so harsh on this issue if I didn't have to hear people complain of my cigarette breaks and if they would provide me a shelter in the winter time to smoke my cigarettes outside.

So your telling me my aunt who smoked for 35 some-odd years, died of lung cancer, just spontaneously?

No, I'm saying that if you ask any passionate nonsmoker, you will find them preaching that smoking and secondhand smoke will cause cancer. There are many people that die from lung cancer that never were exposed to cigarette smoke and there are far more smokers than NEVER get lung cancer as compared to smokers that do contract lung cancer. There is no proof that secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer and there is no proof that smokers will contract lung cancer.

Seriously, though.. At my last job, the smokers smoked at the same time everybody else had break, every 2 hours..
Same here - I was one of the smokers, and I didn't think I should get any more breaks than anyone else.

second hand smoke is clean, its already been filtered by the filter on the cig and by someone's lungs. so If you want to be safe about somking second hand smoke is the way to go.😉

Aceman: Regardless of the cancer issue, it is your choice to smoke, and you have that right. However, as a fellow member of the workplace, I do not wish to be subject to the foul smoky odors and lack of fresh air caused by those who choose to smoke. There's not much that's worse than the smell on clothes, hair, etc. after leaving a smoke-filled room.

And I don't fault or blame you for that. Just don't whine and complain when I go outside every hour to light up and please be just as considerate to me and give me a heated sheltered area to smoke.

I prefer the smell of cowsh!t in my barnlot to the smell of the office. Stupid b!tches put on perfume, hairspray, body lotion and every f@king stinking toxic female product you can think of while at their desks. It smells so much like the perfume section at Wal-Mart that I almost wretch all day. These are the same old cracks that p!ss and moan about people like me smoking anywhere on the property.

hah.. i used to go on smoking breaks and just sit outside.. my manager and some other employees complained.. i told em to watch how productive their breaks were and basically to suck it... i got my breaks after that 😀

have you ever used company time for personal business? If so, stop complaining 😉

Once in a great while to do personal biz on company time isn't even close to taking 10-15 minutes, 4-6 times a shift. Smoke breaks are BS.

At one of my previous jobs me and another employee took a 5 minute break one time for no reason, we both went to the coke machine and got a coke and went outside. When our manager came out to smoke he was like "what are you too doing out here?". We told him we were taking a "coke break". He couldn't argue, so he just let us do it from then on. Or on occasion we took what we called a non-smoke break, or a fresh-air break.

To clarify, we were pretty much the only two people in the store who didn't smoke.

I used to always go out for smoke breaks, that is, unless my supervisor wasn't in, in which we all just sat at our desks and smoked away.
Of course, the boss has an ashtray on his desk and he smokes all day long.

This was at Switch Ops at a Telco, in a $5 million facility. 😀

Because your employer tolerates it, I guess. When I smoked, I never got a break every 30 minutes. Hell, I never got a break every 3 hours in some places I've worked.
