Why do seats on plane(s)'s recline?

I hate that!!!!When you have to sit behind someone who just has to recline the 8.5 inches.......does it really make that big of a difference? I blame the airlines why have reclining seats at all grrrrrrr


But as long as I get to my destination safe everything is OKAY 🙂

I know what the general purpose is.........but it seems strange to implement such a plan when you are working with 3 cubic feet of space..

I have never thought of that, though I have used the recline myself. I guess for those really long flights it is nice to recline, but only if everyone is reclining in a row, that way no one gets squished. It is the same way on a Greyhound bus, the dumb people in front of you recline and you loose all your space.

i swear i hate those dayum seats. My worst story ever was when i went to NY last year and i sit in the very back seat in the middle beside a BIG black guy on my right and a non english speaking japanse guy reading a hentai book to my left and the guy right in front of me just had to recline, i felt like i jus wanted to stand up and yell. If i ever recline on an airplane its only because no one is in the seat behind me, if there is i never recline because i consider it rude.

It works on long flights when everyone reclines and short flights when no one reclines...it's those damn mid-length flights that screw us up 🙂

A better question is why do you need the seat perfectly upright for takeoff and landings?

Somehow I don't think the 2° angle is going to make much of a difference for anyone's life in the event of a disaster. 😉

Most of the frames for those seats are about 20+ years old. When they were built the seats may have been a tad bit farther apart.

Back then you could recline your seat without pushing the seat tray behind you into the poor person's sternum.

If you are flying something better than coach, the recline kicks ass. I once flew from LA to New Zealand on United business class in a 747 (and the ticket was free 😀 ). Those seats go damn near all the way back, and the people in back of you aren't bothered by it because of the room. Business class is awesome.

I find myself reclining about half way..
something like i'm a tad more comfy while not completely pissing off the person behind me.
since i hate the JA in front of me reclining all the way.. (always some fat bastard while i'm trying to read or trying to play my GBA .. :disgust: thanks for the seat on my lap JA :|)
i usually ask the person behind me if it'd be ok to recline.. unless they are already passed out.

Tylenol PM + any form of alcohol at the beginning of the flight helps a lot on long flights 😀

The seats aren't completely useless, but reclined or not i still end up with a stiff neck and a fat feet after the flight.. =\

The recline makes all the difference in the world. Recently, I was on a 747 from Miami to Buenos Aires, first class, and the flight was around 8 hours long. Let me tell you, in first class, when you recline those seats, it is almost as good as sleeping in your bed at home. Made all the difference in the world.

I completely agree about the recline being more significant in First Class. I flew FC to Santa Clara last month, and it was niiiiiiice. (He says in his best Jim Rome impression.)
