Why do regular DVDs on my PS3 look pixelated?

I have a samsung 40 inch 1080p TV...it is a 1061, 8 bit. We got a PS3 for Christmas. HDMI is being used and optical for the sound. When watching regular dvd movies, the upscale makes the picture look"dirty" or 'noisy', like in poorly shot jpegs..you can see the warblyness of it if you look at it closely as well as some of the pixelation...my eye is much more scrutinizing than my wifes. Is it my TV? Cable? Or just a simple fact of upscaling 480 into 1080? JC
 
Sounds like you're talking about video compression artifacts, right? This may be a case of increased detail revealing shit source quality. There have been times when I have seen MPEG compression artifacts even on my standard TV, usually during dark scenes. If that's the case, there's isn't much you can do about it, because that's what is encoded on the disc. Your new setup is like getting a really nice set of speakers only to discover that there were problems in the sound quality of some of your CDs or LPs that you could never hear on your old speakers.

Try popping in one of the Lord of the Rings extended edition DVDs and see if you still have the problem. They were encoded at a high video bitrate to avoid that stuff. If the problem doesn't present itself, then you can probably chalk it up to video compression on the other discs.
 
Check your BD/DVD settings on the PS3, set to "Disable upscaled output= off" and "Normal- Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size." most DVDs look pretty damned good on my 57" 1080i CRT this way. Of course if I put in a flick I have on DVD and BD back-to-back, there is a very noticeable PQ difference though. The fix for upscaling came out back in '07 so unless you lucked out and found some old SKU, it definitely isn't a firmware issue requiring an update. Besides it'll prompt you to update.

I surmise you are also sitting very close to the recommended distance for screen size too.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 upscales automatically. It isn't a feature that can be turned on or off.

Fortunately it is tweak-able.
 
If you don't want your PS3 to process the DVD signal at all, then you'll have to connect it with component. 480i is not an option on the PS3 when HDMI is used but is an option when component is used. With HDMI and upscaling turned off, the PS3 will still deinterlace the DVD signal and transmit it as 480p to the TV. I've never tested this with my PS3, but I've been meaning to try it and see if I notice a difference.

It's because dvds are dirty and noisy like poorly shot jpegs.

It's because dvds are dirty and noisy like poorly shot jpegs.

Not really and even if they are to you I dare you to find any of my films on Blu-Ray. You will not be able to at all. So what are you suppose to do then.

Actually...many of them employ compression that is quite noisy. Because you can't find them on Blu-ray means that you will have to "deal with it".
