why do professional sports players need a union?

are you guys really being underpaid and mistreated by the owners?

gosh, those working conditions must be really bad, to be getting paid to play a game us normal folks do for fun.
working 6 months out of 12 a year, corporate jets, staying in 5 star hotels while on "business" trips... must be rough.

Obviously, without unions, they would not have riches, women and glory. They owe everything to unions.

Eventually, all unionized workers will have it like professional sports players, those living in right-to-work states, not so much...

Which came first... The phenomenal lifestyle, or the union?

do you really think it was the union that pushed the lifestyle? or perhaps the sports agents? the popularity of the sport? and skill?

hehe if you think they only work 6 months a year you are nuts. they may play 6 months but they work even in off season.

Probably part of the NFL's antitrust exemption. My understanding is that the separate franchises are allowed to collude (which is normally illegal), so if a union didn't exist they could all choose to cut pay to $50k/year and no benefits and the individual players would have no recourse other than finding a different job.

I for one am glad both the NFL and NBA locked out the players, these guys have started ruining the league with their antics and huge contracts.

ftfy

Because they want the illusion of earnings protection when in reality all it does it make the players' wages extremely top heavy while the rest of the pyramid get stiffed.

another league would've started, offered higher salaries and attracted the best players.

As someone else said, the unions helped bring in free agency, helped create a contract system in which players weren't permanently owned, and helped players get a fairer share of the revenue that they are generating by playing the game.

They've also helped secure funds for older players, who weren't paid as much, helped make the games safer, and protected players from vicious / abusive work and training cycles.

Do you really believe that average wages would be higher without a union like the NFLPA? I don't. Without league minimums, MOST players salaries would decline dramatically.

oh, i'm sorry. they train for another 2 months in the off season. real tough work. must be rough...

Actually this is false. Guys like Lebron, DWade, Kobe and Dwight Howard are severely underpaid based on most metrics of what they bring to a team (due to having a max salary in the previous CBA).

It's the entertainment business, which generates tons of money. Stands to reason the guys that actually do the stuff that people pay money to see, should get as much of it as they can. It's more powerful to stick together and negotiate as a group.

You think union are kindly organizations that care for the good of their oppressed members? Ha ha ha. You living in fantasy land? Welcome to the real world.

I'm talking about today, if the union never reformed (since it's actually decertified now). The barrier to entry for a new football league would be enormous. Just look at the UFL. There's really no way anyone can compete with the NFL now. They've got locked in TV contracts for years and massive name recognition. Maybe after 10 to 15 years of struggling something could emerge.

I'm not typically pro-union, but in some cases it can be necessary. When the business owners are being allowed to bend the rules (federal law) is one of those cases.

You who really needs the union? The fans. We should be able to force them to lower ticket prices and make refreshments in par with actual prices.

You think if the players were only making $2.5 max or the owners were only getting $50 million in profits, there wouldn't be professional sports? They know they can milk the fans for max profits and they are dumb into to pay $25 for a T-shirt with the team logo. It's pretty pathetic.

i really REALLY hope there is an NFL season ... that is my favorite part of fall.

the only thing i hate about the NFL contracts is that early pick rookies get paid a SHITLOAD of money when they haven't even done anything. that is the only thing I really think needs to be addressed.

A 100 times rougher than anything your Roody Poo ass does. Also keep in mind that punishment their bodies take. The average life span of an ex Pro Football player is significantly less than the rest not to mention the injuries that affect them the rest of their lives.

.

good idea, need to make a Movie goers union as well. get rid of the 6$ small sodas

On the other hand, Luke Walton makes about 4-5 mil per year, Baron Davis and Gilbert Arenas over 10, ManRam is/was due an 8 (?) million dollar payment this summer.

The owners are the one who bailed on their previous agreement, all in the name of a couple of percentage points. They're the ones who made sure that their TV revenue would still flow in even if games weren't played, and they're the ones banking on the players blinking first and accepting a significantly worse deal than they had before.

Whose antics are you upset about?

2011/2012 will be the greatest year in sports history is both the NFL and NBA are locked out

and yes i am 100% serious

Exactly. The effect of this is that tier 2 players get severely overpaid and tier 3 players get underpaid. What most people don't think about is that tier 4 players are pushed out of the market entirely due to league minimum salaries.

Most players never stop working.
