Why do ppl that DYI get AMD Athlon XP's?

I'm not gonna mention the A64's because you have to put down alot of money that isn't worth it. Esp, if your a college student or still in high school.

IMO, the Athlon XP's are crap compared to the superiority possessed by the Athlon mobiles. Why pay more than $100 for chip that can be easily surpassed by a lower price chip? The mobiles overclock insanely compared to other chips percentage wise on air. People are getting a 2.0ghz chip to run at 2.5ghz easily on air is amazing. Even pentiums can't come close to touching it on air but it would be nice if they did.
 
lol, yeah. i just remmembered a paid $95 for my mobo but its all worth it.

just ranting though.
 
Ok, fill me in here. Why is a mobile better than an XP? (I haven't been in the market to replace my 2500+ so I haven't been following the CPU market)
 
Mobiles are just hand picked regular bartons that can run at lower voltages. Well, as it turns out, they can also run pretty damn fast on normal voltages. They're essentially cream of the crop bartons, except they usually cost less than the higher end desktop chips. And their multiper is unlocked so you can set them anyway you want.

Since they're cheaper than desktop varients, there is NO reason that I can think of to get a desktop chip over one of them. Except if you have an old motherboard that doesn't support barton chips. For the record, my motherboard with its current BIOS doesn't recognize mobiles. It just says unknown cpu type. But that doesn't mean it won't work obviously.
 
I use a 1800+ nonmobile. It was handpicked to be DLT3C and costed 55$ @ excaliberpc.com back in the day. It overclocks to 2200mhz with 1.74V.

Non mobile AXP usually top out at 2.4ghz if you are lucky. Mobile AXP usually top out at 2.6-2.7ghz. This is on air of course. While a good AxP mobile still costs 100$, the A642800+ costs 130$ which will give you the gaming performance to justify the 30$ i believe. A64 is not a waste of money.

I chose AXP when A64 was 180$ minimum and I already had an awesome mobo (ABIT NF7-S).

If you are building from scratch, there is no reason to stick with AXP unless you are counting pennies.
 
^ Yeah Tiamat is right here. If you're going for gaming and building a new comp from scratch, you should go with the A64. The XPs are great chips, but the line is done and the A64s are only a bit more expensive: Which is made up for by their upgrade path options and nice performance boosts.

Still, as I said before. If you've got a socket A board and are in the market for a faster chip: Get a XP mobile. Even my 2200+ for $77 from newegg is doing 2300mhz @ 1.675 volts which is a bit past 3200+ speeds.
 
I bought my XP before any mobile XP was ever even mentioned 😛
it was one of the first XP2500+ CPU's, factory unlocked.

IMHO, there are only two reasons peeps buy the XP desktops (1) they uniformed about the mobiles, or (2) the're building a SFF box and many of those mobo's lack the neccesary BIOS adjustments (multiplier usually) to be able to use a mobile. I dunno, maybe a third reason is that they are afraid to make BIOS adjustments and OC (shrug)

1) Mobiles have not been around for halfish as long as regular XPs

2) Not everyone overclocks

3) Where have you been? Lots of people recommend Mobiles over regular XPs since Mobiles have come out

If youre building a new system, theres no reason to not buy an A64. Even though the lowest A64 is a 2800+, it still beats out the 2.2Ghz 3200+ AXP. So clock for clock, A64s are superior to AXPs, be it the desktop or mobile version. The chip is only $30-40 more than the 2500+. So the price difference is definitely justified by the hefty boost in performance.

The A64s are also very good OCers that can easily hit 2.1-2.4Ghz range which beats out any mobile in the 2.5-2.6Ghz range. And don't forget, the proven highly overclocker friendly Chaintech mobo goes for less than $80.
