Why do people want static IPs? and are willing to pay more for it?

Hi everyone, my DSL contract expired with SBC Yahoo (service was crap) and I'm switching to DSL extreme... on one of the plans I get the option of static or dynamic IP, so I'm wondering what the difference is and why people are willing to pay more for a static IP over dynamic.
