I've always wondered about this...why do people use mp3s as ringtones? I get that you want to have different sounds play when certain people call you, but why mp3s? Why not the stock rings that come with your phone? Is anyone, much less the person calling you, going to be impressed that anytime they call the entire room gets serenaded by a 30kbps mp3 version of Fergaliscious?

I'm not bashing people that have mp3s for ring tones..I'm just baffled as to what the logic behind it is

My new phone didn't even have one that went 'ring ring' - I had to download an mp3.

I took the chorus from Paul Van Dyk's "Nothing But You" and made it my ring tone.

See the music note in my sig!

Mine is set to a normal ringer for everyone but Lola, when she calls it's this

:p

I HATE when people set their accounts to play a song when you call them instead of a ring.

I use it because the ringers on my Treo are annoying as hell. Some Collective Soul is a nice alternative!

i think it's easier to immediately associate a song with someone i know rather than the default meaningless ringtones. why have to teach myself new associations?

If it's not within your immediate reach then you will know who is calling without looking at it.
Not that I use any ringtones beyond what my phone came with, but I'm sure that's part of the reasoning.

I've always found the concept of listening to some stupid mp3 everytime your phone goes a bit strange, but whatever floats your boat i guess.

I've got a tone for my better half, that i set when i first got the phone and was playing with the settings, and a tone for everyone else.

I regard the ringer as something to let me know the phone is going, rather than a hip and edgy fashion statement that says 'look at me, you all have to listen to 'pink' everytime someone calls me' ;)

Some people choose not be be physically tied to their phone at all times.

Also, Apocalyptica, Pink Floyd, and Shadows Fall all produce better quality "music" than the ring-tone composers at Nokia/Samsung, etc. ;)

I'm aware of this, but until I get xray vision to see into my pocket i prefer to know who's calling immediately by what song is playing.

I do get kind of annoyed when people have music start playing and they let it ring for awhile. That is so annoying and like you know the person by the ringtone. You'll probably take it out to look at it anyways.

I do because I really don't care for most of the ringtones on my V3c. My current ringtone is Frogs Theme from Chrono Trigger (but that is a midi, so perhaps it doesn't count)

I don't think the OP was complaining about people having customized ringtones, just that they are in MP3 format which has horrible quality at low bitrates.

Don't really care/have an opinion on the matter, but just thought I'd point that out as I seem to be the first to have realized this.

My brother has the victory fanfare from FF3/6 as his ringtone. I mock him mercilessly for it :p

The victory fanfare from FF7 (same?) is my text message tone.
