I don't know if it's true but I have heard that most stores mark-up prices because they know that people are going to steal and they are just trying to help offset the money they will eventually lose from the stolen goods. So in a way we are all paying more for goods so the stores can break even.

I think a big reason that most of these low life hood rats steal is because the penalty for stealing is so slack. I mean if all they are going to do is fine you and not let you go to the store again or call your parents, what's the incentive for not doing it again. Until the laws are changed that makes it a little harsher on people who do wrong then people will continue to break the law.

Thats why I'm all for public execution for people who murder or any other terrible crime. Lets show these idiots were serious about the penalty for criminals. :)

<< I believe you shouldn't come up with bullsh\t such as Those who don't have religion will steal sooner >>

I don't know if people who aren't very religious become thieves, or if becoming a thief makes them less religious, but most thieves (or at least those that I know) aren't exactly the type of people who will be attending church on Sundays.

I don't understand why this seems to be offending some people...I'm not trying to justify theft.

<< I am not saying that you should be happy about people stealing stuff; but why would you (an employee at OM) get mad about this situation?

Aren't you still going to receive your check?
>>

Maybe so, but retail store managers can be rated or reviewed and one component of that review might be the "shrink" of the store -- or the percentage of items that left the store which were not legitimately purchased. If a manager gets slammed in this area, they're not going to make the working conditions too fun for the employees until the theft rates go down.

Also, if there's this type of theft, how far behind in an armed robbery of the store? My wife used to work retail as a manager and encountered all kinds of situations (shoplifting, store safe being stolen, armed robbery -- she wasn't working that day). I think you get the picture.
