Why do people steal stuff? (rant)

Why do people have to go around and steal stuff? I work at OM and found out today someone stole a laptop from our Gateway Country display in the store. First off, why the hell did no one see them jack it? Is it not suspicious to see some mother fncker using a crow bar to pry it free from the "security bar" locking it in place? (Talking about other customers and our own employees, who could be so dense that they don't notice something like that) Then I find out someone stole 2 copies of WinME (IF YOU ARE GOING TO STEAL SOFTWARE STEAL SOMETHING GOOD U STUPID @$$E$!!!)

I know for a fact that most people who steal can afford to buy what they steal (not talking about mp3s and software on the net, I'm talking about IRL) but they want to be a cheap @$$ and want it for free. I've been tempted to steal stuff (believe me, I've had plenty of chances to steal laptops, $700 digital cameras, monitors, I can go on) but my conscious kicks in and tells me not to. Do these people have no morals? Do they not go to church or realize what comes around goes around? Stupid people. Don't give me some excuse about not having enough money. Thats bull $hit. Save up or don't steal it. I swear if I ever try to catch someone stealing something I'll beat them to a bloody pulp. :|

(end rant, sorry had to vent)

Eh... kinda OT, but some of us don't go to church and still have morals. I know you didn't mean anything by what you said tho, so it's all good!

Religion is a strong deterrant from theft, but anyone who needs something will eventually steal it if they can't afford it. Those who don't have religion will steal sooner, and are more likely to steal things that they merely want a lot but don't need. Whether athiests' lack of morals is bad or good is a matter of opinion.

I'm an athiest, but I don't steal (mostly because I'm not fast enough and I really don't need to).

So is the phrase, "Shoplifters will be shot, survivors will be shot again"

If it's something from your house or something you own, I'd agree. But while working at OM, it's not worth defending their property. In today's society, the thief would probably find some way to sue you and get enough money to afford to buy OM.

WTF!? "Whether athiests' lack of morals is bad or good is a matter of opinion." They don't lack morals! WTF are you talking about? Just because you don't, doesn't mean others don't.

Bitch: Sorry for crapping on your rant.

Alright, morals was the wrong word. I meant the fact that they don't have a structured religion further convincing them not to steal. I'm not implying that athiests have no morals, but they don't have another source (besides from their internal thoughts and emotions) telling them that stealing is wrong.

Morals/religion was a wrong choice of words - sorry. I'm just a little pissed right now. It amazes me to see people doing stupid stuff. I see empty boxes everyday at OM that ppl have stolen stuff from, but this laptop thing just pushed me over the edge.

And that bloody pulp thing isnt what it sounded like, only if he/she tries to bowl me over trying to get away.

I know what you mean, RagingBITCH. Today, I found a WinMe upgrade box with wrinkled shrink wrap that shimmered differently. Turns out someone had ripped the bottom of the box out and stretched the wrap (hence why it looked different), ripped the guts to the box out, and put it back on the display. We've had our flat panel monitor stolen right off the display, multiple Palms, and countless pieces of crappy software... and we still got our shrink bonus.

I use to do a bit of shoplifting when I was a schoolie about 20 years ago, so I know the mindset. They think its ok because the only ones being ripped off are the amoral greedy corporations, that are ripping everyone else & raping the enviroment. Well that's the justification, anyway.

I am not saying that you should be happy about people stealing stuff; but why would you (an employee at OM) get mad about this situation?

Aren't you still going to receive your check?

I don't go to church. I better go rip something off to hold those stats true

Hmmm

not talking about mp3s and software on the net, I'm talking about IRL

So, I was in an alternate universe when I got those MP3's, cool :)

Heh. I used to work at Staples a couple years ago as a summer job. Didn't notice stuff getting stolen, but could have easily done it myself. But my, ahem, morals wouldn't let me. I'd 'store use' a marker (so I could use it to write on boxes or whatever), but wouldn't take the thing home because I thought that was stealing. Or we had a bunch of that nice resume paper to throw away. It was just sitting in the paper/box crusher waiting to be recycled. Didn't take that either. They told me I couldn't take anything from the store, and I never did.

Well. Not true. A package of Jelly Belly jelly beans was sliced open as I sliced the box open. Woop. Put it in the back and a bunch of us ate it. Got sick from all the sugar.

They told us if we saw someone stealing, we couldn't stop them until they walked out the front door. See em stuff a laptop under their jacket. We gotta assume they are buying it until they leave, or else there could have been legal troubles for the store. Go figure.

a. My mom and dad won't buy it for me
b. It costs too much
c. For the fun of it

I have a friend who doesn't believe in God.

Even though I am Catholic; I have noticed that he has more courtesy, respect, truthfulness and honesty than I do. In this life no one is perfect and no one is better than anyone.

Pretender,
I believe you shouldn't come up with bullsh\t such as Those who don't have religion will steal sooner

i think that the only reason people steal is because they are greedy and they want more, there is no social class or axillary reason to theft

He is a POS

Anyways, stealing makes our shrink, aka theft prevention goal, higher, therefore decreasing our chance at a yearly bonus (for me it'd be $500 or so, thats like a month's paycheck for me :| ) That and our hours get cut because we didn't make enough/lost too much $$. That and if it doesn't bother you to see people steal stuff from where you work, there might be something wrong here

Duckers - bad choice of words. Then again I feel the same way about people who go hunting who also go to church.

Some people steal because they can't help it. You've probably heard of the term, "Kleptomaniac"? or "Klepto" or Kleptomania?

Kleptomania, a recurrent failure to resist the impulse to steal objects not needed for personal use or their monetary value. There is an increasing sense of tension preceding the unplanned theft, followed by a relief at the time of the theft. The theft is not done with others and not done out of anger or vengeance. Because kleptomaniacs obtain gratification from the act of stealing rather than from possession of the stolen articles, they often steal objects of little value that they could easily buy. Although psychiatrists regard kleptomania as an impulse control disorder, the disorder is not recognized as a legal defense for theft in U.S. or British courts. http://www.iversonsoftware.com/reference/psychology/kleptomania.htm

Then again, there are people who are just "plain" criminals -- they steal stuff, and sell them on eGay (or the back of a van).

:( Sorry to hear about the paycuts you guys get because some stupid joe couldn't resist getting a floor sample.

I used to work for Staples, and during that time I had a few people arrested for stealing. I almost had to go to court once to testify as a witness. I've seen it all, from stolen credit cards being used to attempt a purchase of a laptop (that is what the court case was) to people hiding stuff in copy paper boxes and trying to go through the cashier's line and have it rung up as a $20 box of copy paper when it has $300 worth of phones in it. We had a few computer displays get stolen too. Even had some a-hole steal the CPU out of a 486/DX-50 way back when I first started there.

The bottom line is never to take it personally. Yea, it sucks when something gets 'jacked because everyone catches a rash of sh!t about it. Also, it does have an effect on the bottom line. Staples was too cheap to pay us any bonuses, so I never saw it directly. My paycheck never changed unless I got a raise or worked more hours.

Yup, no incentive at most places to care about theft really. I used to work at target a couple years back and catching a shoplifter got me 10 bux for a reward:p Talk about cheap..

also, i know some of you try to justify stealing music (mp3) the same way shoplifters do for their actions. Your theft is only different in that its much harder to get caught:p morals morals blah!
