A telephone number clearly has more than one digit. You are confusing a number with a digit methinks.

I am surprised that no one said anything about PIN number. Personal Identification Number number. :D
I say phone numbers only when I plan to leave the number for my cell phone and the number for my home phone. ;)

No.
It's a telephone number.
It is made up of digits.
Hence why getting a telephone number can also be termed getting someones digits, the digits being what makes up the overall number.

Besides, who wants to give up a finger every time someone asks them?

Maybe he is thinking like xxx-yyyy, therefore the number is actually consisting of 2 numbers, or (xxx)-yyy-zzzz, which would make it 3 numbers. That's not what I think, but just an idea.

It's one number. Many numerals.

E.g.: 88 is one number (eighty-eight) but is composed of two numerals (a pair of 8's).
