Why do people say 'telephone number' when clearly there are more than one number?

Telephone number = a set of individual numbers that you dial on a phone to call some one.

Telephone numbers = seperate sets of numbers that people have so others can reach them via the telephone.

Here's 2 quarters, call someone who cares...

that is fine because the telephone number is one number.

now, the one that bothers me is the PIN number.

all those paranthesis and dashes that we put in our telephone # are just memory aids...the "real" number is one big one, like 5128469385.

To be fair, if someone asks me for my telephone number, in some cases I give them 2-3 numbers (home, work, cell). OK, not so much fair as charitable.

It is one number as the other people have stated. That is why you do not see any - keys on your telephone's keypad.

Should 100 be referred to as a number or 3 numbers? duh.
