i have been trying to figure it out. my father for example, is getting up at 4:30 in the morning and drive 2 and 1/2 hours just to pay some people so he can run. this just does not make since to me. here it is 90ish degrees outside with terible humidity and people go out into it, pay money to some people, and drive more than 2 hours, just so they can run on a public road? we have a perfectly good tredmill in the house that cousted a hefty penny that is in the airconditioned infront of a 32 inch tv with digital cable and they want to go running outside with all the bugs, nastyness, and people?

Um, what the hell are you talking about? Running a race/marathon is NOT the same as running outside or on the treadmill. It's called accomplishment or for a good cause. How would running on a treadmill in front of a 32" tv help Breast Cancer Awareness? AIDS? Any of the other runs for good causes? How would the accomplishment of running 3 miles on your treadmill compare to running The Rock or the Boston Marathon?

EDIT: assuming races = actual races like above.

Running is great. I've tried a treadmill but I didn't like it, nothing beats being outside in the 90 degree weather with all the bugs, nastyness, and people.

Running on a treadmill sucks.

But I wouldnt really pay to run a race... I'd rather just go to a state park and run the XC course on my own. That way its free and more relaxed... I dont really like races though, just the running.

EDIT: And that nastiness, bugs, and humidity are just fun... nothing like pushing yourself to the limits when its 95 and steaming outside.

You've got to run barefoot so you blend in. If you're wearing shoes they know you're not one of them.

I think it is part of human nature to competitive. No matter how stupid the activity is people will pay someone so they can compete against someone else.
