Why do people respect movies more than video games?

So, where I live. Playing video games is still frowned upon by much of the older generation especially women. Even if you were just to play video games for a few hours while still balancing everything else with your life its still looked down upon. But for some reason, the same people who would go off and hate video games would have no problem with how much movies they would watch and don't complain. I even had a college professor who told gamers they were "Wasting their time" on video games while she was ok with film. She even went on a rant against the Pro Gamers saying that it was weird to play games for a job. I'm mostly thinking of guys like: Totalbiscuit, OMFGcata, Yogscast, Pewdiepie, Tobuscus, Doger, AngryJoe, AngryVideoGameNerd and other youtubers who make their money off of playing games. But these people seem like normal people who just have a passion for playing games. Another thing that I find weird is that if you tell people you have an addiction to video games its "OMG! Lets get this guy help!!" But if you told people that you were addicted to movies they would just think that you have a hobby or that you simply need to cut back. Why is it that movies get a lot more respect than people who like to play video games? This is something that I find weird.

console gaming is much more mainstream now than it was 10-20 years ago, and the whole "nerd" thing isn't nearly as true as it was back when gaming was more niche. but it still has that nerd stigma kinda stuck to it since it started that way.

i think pc gaming still has the nerd stigma stuck to it a lot more than console gaming does though, since it usually requires more tinkering and upgrading.

^I Guess it is partially due to the Nerdy stigma that gamers give off. Maybe they just don't want us to be nerds.

I know people who are/were addicted to video gaming. I don't know anyone who was addicted to movies.

oh and also, i was in vegas this year for the evo tournament, and if you saw the guys who were attending the tournament, you would understand the nerd stigma that goes with it. they stick out like a sore thumb.

been a pc gamer since 13. i don't play games NEAR as much as i used to when i was younger. seems all i play now is dayz when it works and quake 2 in a competitive setting. i'm about as far from a nerd as possible(looks/vibes) but guess where i'm going in 3 hours? QUAKECON.

gf is going to spend a little time there too(her wish, not mine) to check it out. she knows how into the quake 2 community we have. i met 11 guys who i played q2 back in 99, at quakecon last year. i'm meeting 12 this year. went to NY for a concert festival(eric clapton) and stayed with a buddy i met through q2 years ago. i snowboard with a guy in colorado and stay for cheap, met him through q2 also.

bascially. if a man's yard is mowed, and his bills are paid, fuck every one else who wants to judge him for playing a video game. i do have to agree though, the stigma will always be there.

Movies have better mass appeal- young old women children Games not so much for most women and old.

Movies don't require much attention. You just sit and watch.

Movies are party friendly. You go to movies with friends or have a movie night.

If anything, games should be compared to sports, not movies.

My wife hates when I play video games. I don't devote a whole lot of time to it... just an hour here or there each week as a stress reliever. She thinks I should watch some lame TV show with her instead.

So my guess is some people feel it is anti social behavior.

Give it more time. FIlm is an long established and respected art. Decades from now, some classic video games might be looked upon similarly, as some of their fans do now.

how is watching a movie any more social than playing a game, especially multiplayer?

Because there are more respectable films the public is aware of than video games, which are largely seen as kids shooting each other.

Which is more likely: take your middle aged relative to a good movie, or play a video game with them?

I really frickin hate it, trying to watch a movie I've never seen before, with people who don't really watch movies, they just want background noise to go along with their gossip.

My point is I'm about as anti-social when I'm into movies as I am PC games. I want the experience the director had in mind, damn it.

Commenting/laughing/making jokes about a movie while watching it is half the fun of watching them with friends. Sitting there in silence as a group is dumb, might as well go watch it alone.

Anti social with her.

Game he's doing without her, show he sits with her.

This, plus there aren't very many "chick flick" type games or games that aren't about hyper violence. The gaming industry in general just plain doesn't really cater to women much at all. The few games that really do approach serious topics tend to have other issues (often are single player for instance). Games just aren't a good medium for keeping the interest of someone not playing unless you're seriously interested in gameplay, in which case you'd rather be playing. Plus movies and shows tend to have a more immediate payoff, whereas games you'll have to sit through hours to reach the conclusion.

Then there's the fact that she won't be wondering if you're playing it more to stare at the ass and tits of some CGI character wiggle while you beat the shit out of her with an over the top male character, wondering why she isn't out banging some real guy that beats the shit out of real other guys, or a guy that would be going down on her now instead of fingering some plastic buttons.

so doing anything without the wife is antisocial? so if he goes and hangs out with his boys and not her he is being antisocial?

she could sit and watch him play.

so happy my wife isn't like this.

I think the better comparison would be games versus TV. If I game three hours a night, why do people that watch three hours of TV a night find gaming frivolous?

In one case, an old girlfriend looked down on video games because she was jealous of them believe it or not. Even if I'd play while she was sleeping, she didn't like me so involved with anything that she wasn't a part of.

I think the way gamers are viewed is simply an 'off-the-hip' opinion. Like most adults look down on Justin Bieber as a rule; it's a little girl thing and of no worth, even if the kid can sing. "Games are just a little kids distraction and nothing a serious adult would do."

That's actually changing alot. Demographics for games are continually getting older. There is even a substantial elderly market right now. It'll be interesting in another 20 years when people who really grew up with games start retiring. They'll have money and time.

FWIW I'd much rather go to a gaming party than a movie watching party.

Because video games are inherently limited compared to movies, and tend to have (much) less variety.

Even the smallest indie movie can have a genuine emotional human moment. All it takes is a camera, some actors, and a smart filmmaker.

games require massive budgets to create somewhat well-animated facsimiles of people. The indie games that are out some are good, but they simply don't have the budget and so tend to be pattern-platformers.

The massive budget games have to pander to the lowest denominator. So it's going to be lots of violence. Lots of violence. Even the critically acclaimed Bioshock games are still "kill everything that you can" games.

One day, I hope that game creation tools are advanced enough that a single person can create incredibly detailed worlds. Honestly, I"m not sure if its possible, given all of the work that goes into drawing textures and constructing wire frame models, but if that were to ever happen and a single person could create a game like one writes a novel, then maybe.

I have learned things about people, the world, even myself from watching movies, but I cannot say the same for any games I've played. I like both as forms of entertainment, but I can take far more away from a movie than I can from a game and thus, I guess, I respect them more. I don't really think about it like that, but if pressed I would say that's the case.

True, wonder if there have been any movie goers that go on 48 hour movie watching binges that have died? :p

I've come close thanks to Netflix streaming & having full seasons available :awe:
