Why do people put "fart pipes" on their cars? You know, those stupid loud mufflers.

Um, the ideal rev range on these small engines are in the mid to high rpm's. If done correctly these additions can help performance in this range. The problem is that the quality parts are expensive so most people can't afford them. Instead they turn to the cheaper mufflers that probably does little to help performance. They are loud and not as deep sounding as the quality exhaust systems. I've heard plenty of quality exhaust systems and they're almost silent at idle but gives a nice deep roar at WOT.

But if you're going to spend big bucks on aftermarket parts to increase HP, why not spend them initially and buy a better car?

You realize that if you bought an EVO or STi, you do receieve MORE GAINS from an aftermarket cat back systems right? Especially since they use forced induction. The image that these exhaust boltons are nothing more than ugly, loud mods, shows the lack of knowledge that this forum has over car matters.

Look, quiet and subtle. http://www.rs-r.com/products/exhaust/exmag.php
Are you going to call it rice just because it's made for a 4 cylinder car and not your M4D FA$T! V8 Monster!?

It's all about preference and if you'd rather work on a 4 banger (god forbid :Q) or a V8 then so be it. Don't lump all that Fast and Furious, Ebay crap into one category.
An Evo and STi are very different from a Civic or really any other normally aspirated car. An NA our cylinder will get very little performance from even a full header-back exhaust system. As ZV said, you're hurting low end power and only adding a little to high end power. A V8 actually benefits from an exhaust system because it has a significant more amount of back pressure, same goes for forced induction.

Yes, I do have a dyno sheet to prove it.
Difference is you had a turbo. Put that on an N/A Impreza and you won't get squat from it

How do you know they haven't changed out the entire exhaust? That does increase performance. Do you get on the ground and crawl underneath their car? Something tells me you see a car with the fart can stick out and just assume that's the only thing they've upgraded.

My cousin's current boyfriend has a mid 90's Altima. He's got all the crap on it; stickers, bodykit, fart pipe, blue covers on all the wiring under his hood, big stereo (that sounds like s**and has static, even when a CD is playing). He also had tons of gauges and control boxes all over the place inside the car too. He told me the engine is worked to the balls and he runs low 13's. I told him I'd believe him when I saw it and he told me he'll take me for a ride in it.

Later that night, he brings me out to his car and gives me a ride. Not only does he drive worse than any other ricer douchebag I've seen, but his car is slow too. He tried to do a burnout and had the e-brake pulled for a 20ft burnout and he was pulling the e-brake to make the car slide around turns. He was also jerking the wheel on the 1-2 and 2-3 shift to try and give me the illusion that the tires broke traction and the front of the car started sliding to the side.
Now here's the best part: Judging from the many, many performance cars I've driven and been a passenger in, his car was a mid-15 second car AT BEST. And honestly, I believe my Cavalier (5spd Ecotec, ran a 16.1 my 1st and only time at track so far) is faster.

Now mind you, this douchebag was doing all this on residential streets. Not just any residential streets, but THE ONES RIGHT IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AROUND THE BLOCK FROM MY HOUSE!
(My cousin's 21st birthday party was at my grandmothers house, which is right across the street from my house)

It's usually a safe assumption.

Had some guy in a maroon mint condition Camero SS pull up next to me the other day running like that, and he'd make any kid with his four cylinder rice burner pee his pants while parked at the light. There's no sound in the universe quite as sweet as that.

Otherwise, the loud stuff is just plain annoying. We have several towns aroud here with noise ordinances, and the cops will pull the idiots over and ticket them.
glass-packs are illegal here.

there are plenty of high flowing mufflers out there.

Also, the lope you like at idle is caused by the cam and how much overlap it has and how tight the lobe seperation is. Most good after market cams are designed with fast lift rates and fairly tight lobe seperations to maximize power while giving a reasonable idle.

My next cam will be a CompCams Xtreme Energy XE262H for my 318.

I really don't mind them too much. Realistically speaking, it's not as dangerous to you as it looks, since they tend to be going so much faster that you don't have to touch the brakes or swerve to avoid them. They're basically a threat to no one but themselves...

Now, someone follow up on that. I left it open. :D

How are you supposed to follow that up? It's like trying to beat Chuck Norris in a fight.

What do speed and aerodynamics of a car have to do with how much horsepower you gain from said exhaust system????????????????
And you have the audacity to start the reply by calling someone else a moron?

Perhaps you should contact the IRL and explain to them how the motion of exhaust gas out of the pipe will cause a pressure change and draw more air so they can get rid of those turbos. If what you say is true , they could use your physics defying system and eliminate the turbo lag.

If you like having to rev up that high to go anywhere... :disgust:

Gosh, speaking of ricers, Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift is full of it. I can't believe I wasted 90 minutes of my life watching it.

What are your guys opinions with straights on a V8?

I had semi straights on my old 90 mustang, 2.5" equal length headers into an offroad H pipe and then into a 2.5" flowmaster dual chamber exhaust...was damn loud for sure but not like the ricer loud...I liked it but was somewhat annoying when I would set off virtually every car alarm in a parking garage.

What about Harley guys altering their pipes to get louder roar then? I can hear them a mile away on the 405 freeway here in CA.

*STILL* lmao at this whole idea that "you'll get more performance.."

Ahhh, I see.. The automotive engineers at every automotive company are morons.. Here, they've been working for years to increase mileage to meet federal regulations, and begging the government to lower those regulations because it's just so hard to do. Yet, all they had to do was change the shape and size of their muffler a little bit and bam! Problem fixed.

*sigh* If those engineers went back to high school, they'd learn the biggest secret: slap on a few stickers and you get an additional performance boost.
