Why do people put "fart pipes" on their cars? You know, those stupid loud mufflers.

Not only are they fugly and annoying, but they do dont do anything for performance, so why bother?

..most of em don't have a pot to piss in so it's the only alleged psudo performance mod they can afford. Same thing wit the blow brains the hack the mufflers off motorcycles..usually Harley's and hang Cherry Bomb glass packs on em. You can hear those things miles away and does nothing for street level performance.

True enthusiasts would know that if they're going to gains, they'd have to change both the muffler and the associated piping (up to the catalytic converter). The performance exhaust systems are mandrel bent which means better flow with less pressure drop.

Exactly. It's the natural progression of things - apes beat their chests, make loud vocalizations, and make noise on branches. We now have technology to augment that. I imagine that if you taught an ape how to make a lot of noise, like with a bullhorn, he'd love the thing.
How far we've come...

People have always done that to cars and trucks. It's just that straight fours lack the melody that a V8 w/ a 90 degree crank has. Though I have a muffler that is virtually a glasspack, the three catylitic converters that I have would keep a straight pipe quiet.

Probably never got enough attention as a kid so now they're trying to attract in one of the most annoying and ridiculous ways possible. Once they "grow up" they'll realize how stupid it is though and put their money towards something more worthwhile like an IRA, MM or savings account.

The difference is, the loud exhaust of a Harley serves a purpose. That purpose is to let the jackasses that don't check their blindspot, know he is there and doesn't feel like being wiped out.

I don't mind the old style glass packs on classic muscle cars. They aren't that loud, but they make the car sound dowright sinister with that intense and low pitched 'gug-gug-gug-gug' sound, like the devil clearing his throat. All eight of them. Had some guy in a maroon mint condition Camero SS pull up next to me the other day running like that, and he'd make any kid with his four cylinder rice burner pee his pants while parked at the light. There's no sound in the universe quite as sweet as that.

Otherwise, the loud stuff is just plain annoying. We have several towns aroud here with noise ordinances, and the cops will pull the idiots over and ticket them.

lolz, you guys are morons. They aid performance. The way it works is the larger pipe is at the back in the low pressure slipstream of the car. Because the pressure is lower, the exhaust gasses get sucked out more which in turn sucks in more air/fuel at the front. Obviously, the larger the can, the more sucktion you get through. It's like an induction kit that sucks through rather than pushes.

Usually you get a 5 or 10HP boost, depending on speed of the car and aerodynamic properties.

This is the only plausible explanation, because it's true that they don't increase performance. And I cannot bring myself to believe that someone actually thinks that they sound good. On a 4 cylinder econobox, these fart cans sound horrible. I have never heard one that sounded good.

And you can always tell when the idiot is driving a slushbox. eeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeEEEEE

I suppose Mr Wizard here can next explain why a large rear spoiler helps with a front wheel drive rice burner.

Um, some of those "fart pipes" DO increase performance, the $100 bumblebee/fireball exhausts at K-Mart might not, but others most certainly do.

DUH!!!! it increases the low pressure slipstream effect out the back of the car thus aiding the exhaust system. Basic physics, boy...

this is what i have on my mustang. even though it is a v6, it sounds GREAT and i get commets all the time asking if it is a modified v8. It does add some power, definately noticable when the straight back dual exhaust went on instead of the 'Y' exhaust the v6 comes with stock.

Yep, and the same goes for the harleys, and the booming car stereos
