why do people need 100fps?

That link didn't get very much in-depth. The link I have already supplied has given much better detail, and goes into some optometry, which gives you a better idea of how things work. Firing Squad just did a BS argument, and I find it hard to believe anyone found out anything new from it.

i dont like frames per second so i bought a VooDoo5 5500! It hasn't given me any frames per second problems at all!

I agree there is no need to have 100FPS those people are just purely in it for the brag vaule.

Way off.

The eye's refresh rate is in the thousands.

The brain is such that we have a hard time detecting the flicker at around 85 hz.
Change your monitor refrsh rate to 65,75 and 85 and I am sure will notice the difference.

Ideally in a game, the fPS does not go below 85 min, so 250avg is not excessive.

Not entirely true,some people can.Babe Ruth saw the indiviual frames on movies,he said they gave him headaches.



Another reason to get higher frame rates is FPS aren't linear.On TV or movies the rate never changes, but on games the rate goes all over the place depending on what has to be rendered.So if you have 15 bad guys shooting all sorts of things at you in a large open area with lots of light sources and shadows the fps is going to drop like a stone in a well, and that's when you need frames the most.

A bit of choppiness then means b-bye.

I see a 30FPS of bull sh!t on this thread. ;)

EDIT - I use &quot;cl_showfps 1&quot; in counterstrike. Its much simpler then net graph.

Or look it up in any biology book.
The proteins in the retina react thousands of times a second.

As far as your eye/brain combo, just change your monitor's refresh rate.
Anyone can see the difference between 60hz, 70hz, and 85hz.

The 180 degree argument I don't get. What if instead of the current 360 degree unit for a circle, we decide to call 3,600 degrees a full circle and 1,800 degrees a 1/2 circle? Does it follow that we need 1,800 fps to turn around?

think of it as degree of control. In that 1 second your control depends on fps. at 30 fps your level of control is in 12 degree increments. Not very precise eh? It doesn't matter what you want to call a degree, the level of precision is dependent on fps. Thats why games have mouse smoothing, average out crap like that for low fps.
