Why do people (mostly old) do this?

Not in the wikipedia list, but you're right. I have a couple of reciprocating saws that I use "Sawzall" for when speaking about them.

Dittos...I more remember the intoxicating smell of the purple mimeograph fluid when I was a kid. That shit would give you a hell of a buzz...Our mimeograph machine was in a pretty small room (not much bigger than a closet) and students and teachers all got buzzed when using the thing.

Ditto!

So does this mean I can create a new search engine and call it a "google machine" because "googling" something has become a generic term for searching for something on the internet?

Sure as long as you don't mind changing it to "zipzoomfly machine" a year later. 😉

When you get old, you sometimes stop caring about shit that doesn't matter because simple things like tying your shoes get hard. That's why you see old people wearing shoes that don't have laces, but instead use Velcro (TM) brand hook and loop fasteners.

It's bad for the companies in terms that if they don't protect their brand and it becomes an everyday term then they can lose control over it.

oh looks like it was covered on the first page.

If I ask for a cola beverage, I say Coke.

Oh god not again.

Srsrly - I'm pissed that TiVO is any DVR> TiVO is far superior to any DVR, and your stupid Comcast DVR doesn't even come close to what a TiVO can do. Stop trying to think that it can.

Brillo Pad, Advil (for ibuprofen), Tylenol (acetaminophen/paracetamol). Vicodin (hydrocodone w/ acetaminophen) are all household names. Same with Kleenex and Nyquil. For tools - vice grips/crescent wrench too.

It's become generic for using "Google". Nobody uses anything else....At least nobody with half a brain.....

they've probably seen countless products fade in and out of relevance, and no longer care enough to specify so clearly. how many of you have heard of colecovision?

I hear it all the time. Every MP3 player is a iPod. Every GPS unit is a tom-tom. Every PDA is a palm (I even heard this on NCIS.), Every browser is a google...

It seems that brand recognition has a problem. People don't know the difference between the products and so the name gets lost. I guess this is good for store owners when someone walks in saying "I want an Ipod" meaning "I want an MP3 player"

All this means is that advertisers do have an effect on some people, and that their "work" remains valuable to companies.
