Why do people mark dollar bills?

I always get money with marks on them now. Numbers, stamps etc. The ones that stuck in my head are the "Gay Dollars" and the ones where you can track where it went online.

I really don't see a point in marking them. Is it to see if you get the money back?

Its a government plot... man. It's like codes to tell the alien broccoli mutants where to go to suck out your brains.

I know some people like to write "www.wheresgeorge.com" so they can see how the money travels through the country. Some stores check for counterfeiting. And some people object to having religious references on our currency, so they mark out the "In god we trust".

People do it to see if any of their bills will be recirculated back to them

Sometimes I'll write cryptic messages on bills just to amuse myself. But actually, I read that the average bill isn't in circulation for very long, since they wear out.
