Now I live in the LI burbs and it comes in handy a few months a year with the snow, and Home Depot trips, and my hockey bag (which could fit a human sideways) + sticks, etc. You want to argue about the gas-guzzling ? I don't give @ sh!t I'm spending more... I saw the 12/15mpg sticker when I bought it, thanks. I care about it as much as you care about pollution from any car's exhaust.
I bought this thing in '95 before the SUV craze... it was sporty to me and practical (the Buffalo thing) at the same time. Now people see it and would just think I'm just another SUV-owner clone.... why ? People know jack sh!t and generalize everything as long as it doesn't apply to them. It makes me sick. I'll name names if anyone asks.
Since this is an SUV thread, I'll say it again... you want to argue NEED... you tell me when sports car owners NEED to go 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and how often they do it. You want to argue IMAGE, these owners would be your fvcking target. I hope all of you haters drive econoboxes. G'damned hypocrites.
That's really swell. I'm glad 90% of the country doesn't think like you do...oh wait, they do...or should I say did?
So, because you owned an SUV before the SUV craze it somehow makes you immune to the bashing? Nope, sorry...it doesn't. I'll grant you this, if you live in a snowy climate a 4x4 is nice but I've driven many FWD cars that were much better in the snow than any 4x4 I've ever driven (read SAAB). 4x4 only really helps you to get going which was never a problem driving on paved roads in my SAAB.
In short, I won't hold it against you for owning a 4x4 if you live in a snowy climate but for the rest of the fvcktards in SoCal or pretty much anywhere else that it almost never snows, you people can kiss my ass. You don't NEED an SUV.
Yes we do.
Life sucks without one.
No snowboard trips.
No landscaping.
No home improvement.
No tailgating.
No hauling large electronics that you just bought.
No taking friends out camping.
No firewood.
No planting trees.
Man, life sucks without a SUV.
Oh bullsh!t. I've been a homeowner for 7+ years. I can count the number of times I've needed an SUV or truck on 2 hands. You'd have me believe that it's impossible to do home improvements unless you own an SUV? You're high on crack.
So, you justify purchasing a vehicle that costs $10,000 more than a fullsize sedan or a wagon and gets 7-8mpg worse fuel economy on the off chance that you'll actually use it a few times during the years that you own it? I have one word for you...sucker!!! You're the reason Ford and GM have been floating along in profits for the last 10 years. Pat yourself on the back for you are a sucker!!! You've been had.

Yep, I had a Rodeo. I paid $3k for it and it got horrible gas mileage, it was roomy in the back but no moreso than any fullsize sedan and everytime I needed to haul anything larger than a few bags of dirt I needed to hire or borrow a truck from someone else. I think I'm qualified to pass judgement on these vehicles...they suck.
Look, I'm not saying that nobody should own them, just that most people who do own them really don't use them as they are designed to be used. It is clearly a fad and a huge marketing ploy and scam on the consumer. People have been shelling out good money for these ridiculous vehicles for years and I'm glad that the death of the SUV is near.
Sue me. That's how I feel. I'm not going to justify a sports car in this post because at least with a sports car you actually get something for your money other than a few extra sq ft of sheet metal and some carpet.

If I start commenting on how impractical sports cars are because of space and gas mileage and go on to say how infrequently people use them the way they were designed to be used, on roads with speed limits, how does that support the base of your argument which has been NEED or even gas mileage ? You would've been better off getting a family sedan for that family of yours. This self-righteous crap, especially coming from you, is getting ridiculous. Saying "I hate sports cars, sue me" would mean nothing except "I like to make self-serving arguments so I can feel better".

Damn dude. Home owner for 7 years and you've only needed a SUV/truck twice per year or less.
Your home and life must really suck. Best of luck to you though.

SUVs are wasteful and most people own them because they are suckers to marketing...not because they need them. I defy you to argue that even 50% of the people who buy SUVs couldn't be better or equally served by a car. Clearly many people are coming to this realization since SUV sales are dwindling and used car lots are full of them...I guess 100% of the people who have traded them in have come to realize that they don't need them.
Of course, this is just an observation based on current market trends. 😉

*nod* I love how the commercials depict graceful SUVs nimbly handling the offroad situations each one of us encounters daily on our commute to work or on our weekly trips to the grocery store  But that's what sells, at least to the gullible. And most people are gullible 🙁

What about the sports sedan commercials that often feature totally clear roads and they're doing about 120 MPH down Main Street? I guess those same gullible people watch those ads and think "Man, if I get one of those babies, the roads will just open right up for me. I'll get to work so much faster. I gotta get me one of those." Or what about the pickup truck ads where they're dropping some insanely large unidentifiable object into the bed of the truck from a crane? I know a lot of us have cranes in our back yards. And just think of the huge stuff we could dump into the back of one of those trucks!

That camry bottoms out on an idea😉
We'll be buying a pop-up camp trailer to tow behind it, and borrow our neighbor's utility trailer to haul materials.
All in all, we are happy with the purchase. it averages 20MPG in a mix of town/highway driving, or all highway over mountain passes with the throttle down. It gets as high as 24MPG if driven conservatively.
In contrast, the '98 camry has never bested 30MPG, and averages 27~28MPG.

What kind of SUV gets MPG's like that? Most that I know of measure fuel consumtion in GPM- Gallons Per Mile. Seriously what is it?

Why do I love driving an SUV? (Actually I drve a Maxima, my wife has our urban assault vehicle):
Basically my wife likes to talk on her cellphone and can't be bothered with tiny cars getting in her way so we decided to get a large vehicle AND add a bull-bar for added damage points if an econobox gets in the way.
She also shops in bulk and with 10 bags of salt and boxes of bottled water and diapers it is a lot easier to load and unload. More importantly, we both know that mini-vans are emasculating and hideous.
Our large lab (looking to add a second soon) slobers a lot and since we take him everywhere, in the car we like to keep him at a distance.
We are expecting our second child in a few weeks and going on a short trip/hiking/biking with equipment and assorted baby gear takes up a lot space.
Anyway I couldn't care less about gas mileage as long as we are safe and comfortable.
edit: Yes we are both extremely insecure so an SUV was our only choice. 😀

Well said, I would prefer my wife and child be in one of these if they are ever unfortunate enough to be in an accident.

hold on, you're saying that just because not a lot of people own sports cars it means those who do own them are justified in doing so ? Or are you saying it's not a worry because of it ?Originally posted by: JulesMaximus

Well, your argument might hold a little more water if 90% of Americans owned sports cars and if sports cars used as much gas as most SUVs do. But they don't...sorry.
