Why do people like those irritating Bose cubes?

A couple of 'supposedly' intelligent network engineers I work with we're talking about the lastest uber_expensive LCD Hi-Def sets they were buying to go in their new houses. Before we could start making Tim Allen testosterone grunts though, they started talking about the rest of their system, and bragging about being sold on those dumb little Bose cubes.

So, we're dropping several grand on big screen Hi-Def NFL Sunday ticket action, but you're getting speakers smaller than my grandmother uses on her PC? Sup with that?

A buddy of mine used to sell Hi-fi at a local audio store that catered from flat out junk to hyper exotic, 10k+ a pair quasi ribbon planars, and we'd hang out after closing some nights and play with all the gear. The sales staff's comments about selling to people they sold Bose cubes though was likely on par with how Nigerian spam scammers must talk about their victims while sipping on a six-pack. Basically, not with a lot of flattering adjectives. Like; "If you throw them in water, they float, which is a safety feature because the only place they sound good is mounted on the pontoon boat where you met your wife."

Anybody have these things and like them? Why?

A better question would be "why do people like Bose"?

The answer is pretty simple - people will believe anything if it's driven into their heads enough.

Because, for the size they are, they produce better sound than most. I have a basic Onkyo system that's not great, but is not awful either. The speakers, however, are quite large which makes placement and setup more difficult than those little Bose speakers. What people are buying when they buy Bose is not the sound, but rather the convenience of being able to mount the tiny speakers anywhere.

What I don't get is it's goes contrary to male evolutionary preferences:

Bigger TVs, amp with more watts, more channels of sound, bigger houses, bigger SUV's.....and these little speaker with incoherent sound I wouldn't mount in a 5yr old's BigWheel for fear they'd get laughed at by other kids for lacking mid-range clarity.

Chalk one of for marketing..... I guess.

Because men are pvssies and it's the woman of the house telling him what he can buy and what he can't buy for the living room. Bose knows this and designed a speaker women love: small, white, and almost non-existent!

WAF + it's a status symbol because everyone knows about them ;)

They don't know better.

More specifically, there are some people that think that since electronics in general have gotten smaller and better over years, the same phenomena must exist for speakers as well.

Yea, and if I ever had a woman who dictated audio equipment to me, I'd simply turn off the built-in speakers completely and we'd listen in silence.

I'd rather have no audio then the crappy noises a Bose system makes.
