Why do people keep thinking that nVidia's next will be 9800?

Each generation having an interval makes general sense, but leaves interesting exceptions as in when a GeForce 8400 loses to a 7900GTX.

Five digit starts to become more too much of a history difference especially when they leaped quite a bit in architecture. But since this next arch's leap is unknown, it is too soon to tell whether they are wearing out GeForce as an extendable name although the physics and geometry improved well they still don't represent the entirety of the innovations.

I doubt thee will be any lawsuits over a geforce 9800. We already have a gf 8500, and I don't see Ati suing them. Plus it would be stupid, you can't own a number. Why don't I buy all rights to the number 9300, and sue nvidia for any card using that model number?

I could see a lawsuit being possible, if ATI ever saw a reason to. But whether they'd have a chance of winning, I'm not sure.

You can't own a number but you can trademark it, protecting you from having your competitor take it. However, ATI's product is the Radeon9800, which is probably sufficiently different from Geforce9800.
