Why do people keep talking about Sec. Rice running for President in '08?

DR. RICE: ... let me say, I don't have any desire or intention of running for president. I've never wanted to run for anything, and I just don't have any desire to do it.

MR. RUSSERT: Desire or intention?

DR. RICE: Both.

MR. RUSSERT: There was a great American named General William Sherman. and this is what he said, "If nominated, I will not accept. If elected, I will not serve." Will you issue a Shermanesque statement?

DR. RICE: Tim, I don't want to run for president of the United States.

MR. RUSSERT: "I will not run"?

DR. RICE: I do not intend to run for--no. I will not run for president of the United States. How is that? I don't know how many ways to say "no" in this town. I really don't.

MR. RUSSERT: Period? Period? I will not run as president of the United States.

DR. RICE: I have no intention. I don't want to run.

MR. RUSSERT: "I will not run."

DR. RICE: I think people who run are great. I don't want to run.

MR. RUSSERT: That is a Shermanesque statement?

DR. RICE: Shermanesque statement.

MR. RUSSERT: You're done. You're out.

DR. RICE: I'm done.

MR. RUSSERT: There's news.

DR. RICE: I hope not.

MR. RUSSERT: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who just said she will never run for president, correct?

DR. RICE: Tim, why do you keep pressing me to make these statements?

MR. RUSSERT: Well, because if you're secretary of state, will it affect your ability...

DR. RICE: I don't want to run for president of United States. I have no intention of doing so. I don't think I will be president of the United States ever. Is that good enough?

MR. RUSSERT: And you will never run?

DR. RICE: I don't intend to run.

MR. RUSSERT: But it's different.

DR. RICE: I won't run.

Other than being able to say "Look, a something other than a white guy is president!" I can't really think of any. And her being possibly the most prominent African American Female currently in politics makes her the prime choice. (I.e. most widely recognized)

Either Dubya will declare himself eternal ruler, or they will install Jeb bush as the next president. Elections are irrelevant.

Dick's book has a lot to do with it.

The funny thing is that you could take OP's quoted interview and replace Condi with Hill. Hill has said repeatedly that she isn't going to run for prez but that hasn't stopped anyone from crowning her as the obvious Dem nominee.

It's basically the same with Condi. People assume that she is giving the same disingenuous statement about not wanting to run for prez. I guess we just have to wait and see...

has Hillary said that she wasn't running?

Condi's statements seemed like a 100% unambiguous no whereas it's seemed to me that other front runners like McCain and Clinton are giving coy, non-commital answers.

Sounds like someone is afraid Dr. Rice will run 😀

me? I'm indifferent. I've got no strong feelings toward Rice either way.

but I've never seen anyone state so clearly that they were absolutely not running for president or interested in being president and then turn around and run for it. and yet everyone keeps throwing her out there as a possible canidate...

She will not run. She made that very clear many times.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a politician say that...

examples? 'cause I can't really think of any, at least on a national level like that.

if a canidate is unsure, they usually give an ambigious answer instead of an absolute and clear-cut no.

Hillary hasn't been coy, she's simply said she will decide when the time comes.

No way Aunt Jemima will ever win the GOP nod for '08, let alone the actual election.

Do you think the entire US electorate will submit to cronyism as easily as Bush has for his entire presidency? America will want to cleanse their hands of the entire Bush administration, regardless of whether the overall winner is a republican or democrat.

because they ahve nothing better to talk about with her.

when you run out of questions you can just keep asking her are you gonna run. gives the journalist something to add if its a slow news day.

The same way they "cleansed their hands" of the Clinton Administration after 8 years of scandal? 😛

Hillary says the same thing yet she is a lock for the Democratic nomination.

What do you care? Scared Rice may take some of the black vote and win?

Condi for Prez? What a giggle. Like most black Republicans, she's not a politician, she's an appointee. There is a difference, and a very big one. Much of the Repub base won't vote for blacks, ever, or women, for that matter. They're "conservatives", remember?

Actually running for office requires a voter base, a constituency, something black Republicans haven't had since Reconstruction, and sure as hell won't find in the Party they serve today.

my point is that Hillary -- or any politician that I can think of -- has not said the same thing.

her answer is always "wait and see," or "I'm not ruling it out," not "I absolutely, 100% will not run for president."

You really think that the Republicans wouldn't vote for her because she is black?

You think Republicans are controlled by the KKK or something???
