Why do people insist on negotiating?

I put something up on craigslist for $20. Guy calls me and offers me $15. I say no, too cheap.

Next time I list it, I decide to list it for $30 so that hopefully someone will offer $20. Sure enough, same guy calls, and offers me $25. I say "Oh man, that's cheap, but fine, I'll take it."

Why can't people just pay what I ask for when they KNOW it's cheap? (Item is worth $50+, but I wanted to get rid of it).

well thats how CL usually works, you're supposed to put a higher price so you can have some barter room. Anyways, if you want it 20 exactly, next time just put FIRM somewhere in the thread/title?

Some people do, however most of the time people put up higher prices than they are expecting.

because most people will still try to negotiate anyway.

also, obligatory:

Monty Python : Haggling

if you want to sell it for $20 i'd put it for $25. sure enough some people will say he'll take it for $15 then you counter-offer him $20.

some joker offered $200 for my brand new rebel XT kit on CL... what a joke.

I hate haggling, so much I don't do it.

Actually I did it for my house, I looked up what the guy payed for it and offered him a few % above that (which he thought was low-balling). We eventually settled at $5,500 above what I offered... which is fine.

I just don't like it, it's like a socially acceptable insincere relationship, built on the expectation of deceit by both parties... always leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I never buy new cars, and have always found the deals from friends and acquaitances sufficient.

I set a price on appliances and large purchases that I'm willing to pay and either find someone willing to take it or don't buy it....

I may be nuts, but I don't like haggling for sure.

Wait until you have a garage sale and you have one item you bought for $5 priced for $.25 and they offer you $.05. I felt like throwing the thing in the trash and telling them it wasn't forsale anymore.

btw-I have a little different thread over the sale price of a vehicle in The Garage. I priced something very reasonably and I'm wondering if they're seeing it as desperation on my part. Although, I'm willing to negotiate, all I'm getting now are low ball offers. 😕

I purchased a used dehumidifier today. He said he wanted 75, I offered 50 and he accepted. We are both happy.

You can't blame people for trying to get the best deal possible.

So you finally figured out how to play the game, made 25% more than you would have accepted, yet you come here to bitch about it?

You suck at life.

Its not like they have anything to lose by trying.

exactly. i always ask if they will take whatever i think its worth.

considering many in FS/FT price there shit 80% retail.

If i get a lowball i have no trouble telling them no. i don't get insulted or pissed off.

Why do some people insist on not negotiating? They get all offended like I just asked them to show me their penis.

My counter-offer is showing you one ball.

Throw in some helmet and partial shaft and we have a deal.
