I know how slow Canon/CF reading can be, because I owned one, and it sucks. As does the extra software issue.

My card reader causes issues with my PC's audio, so I have no choice. I plan on building a new rig soon, that should fix it. But till then..

I don't want a card reader because I like a nice clean desk. I suppose I could put it in a bay in the front of my tower, but thats just too much work!

I have a card reader, but I don't use it because I'm lazy. The 30 minutes it takes to read 150 D70 NEFs is nothing compared to how much time I spend on a computer daily.

It's so much easier and faster to slam the CF/SD/MS whatever into a reader and BAM!

Not to mention those connectors on the cameras will break then what's Johnny gonna do? :p

Err, I just plug the usb cable into the camera and turn it on then XP recognizes and the software automatically downloads my images, it requires no intervention, why would I waste my time ejecting the CF inserting it into a card reader, then opening the card in My Computer to copy the pictures?

Why would I pay for a reader when I get the cable with the camera for free?
The only thing I use my memory cards is for my camera.

Yup, same here. I plan on getting a memory card reader some day but at the moment I've had poor luck in finding a decent one that supports firewire, if I get a memory card reader, it has to be the fastest out there and at this point most are USB 2.0....

I have a DSLR. It is a pain in the ass to hook up the USB to the slot because it is so hard to see here in near darkness. I bought an internal USB card reader and I will never go back. I have since bought my sister one too since I think it is so convenient.

I used to hook up the camera directly, but I got tired of how slow it was for large transfers - the camera is only USB1.1. So I got a USB2.0 card reader (took me a while to find one that worked with CF Type II/Microdrives though) and it is indeed a lot faster, not surprisingly :p

Edit: It only really matters when I've done a ton of pictures (hundreds) or video though

I just use the PCMCIA CF adapter for my laptop but it's slow when transfering large videos (hundreds of mb's in size) since it goes throug PIO mode. I'm trying to find a DMA mode CF PCMCIA adapter, any such thing?

They invented these sweet things called "lights" to make things easier to see. You should look into them, they may help you! :D

someone already mentioned desk clutter issue up there. my gripe with card readers is that its just easier to just hook up the camera then taking out the XD card and putting it back in.
I even used to have built-in card reader on my antec aria that saw almost no use except for first few times when I just had to try it for the coolness factor.
If all you do with your computer is uploading pictures from your camera all day and your life depends on how quick the uploads are done it may really help, but otherwise I couldnt care less about losing few more seconds. Most times they are done in matter of few seconds anyway.

I hate connecting cams too. I have never once even used my S230 to transfer pics. I've used a card reader since the dawn of time :p

Readers cost money.

The cable comes with the camera for free.

That is the reason.

I have an internal bay card reader and it is great but it cost $28 or so.

couldn't be more timely for me........ I misplaced the cable for my new camera, and had to remove the card and pop it in the card reader slot on my laptop tonight:)

I use my Microtech firewire CF reader to download 15MB NEFs from my 2GB CF cards... it's much preferable to downloading straight from the camera because it doesn't consume power from the battery, and I can always pop in a different card and keep shooting if necessary while the other one downloads.

I use the cable, I don't have a card reader and don't need one. My SD card is only 512mb so it doesn't take too long to copy the files over, and my camera is USB 2.0 so it's fast enough.
