Why do people hate Vista?

Btw with UAC enabled you should get a very brief black/darken screen(then that fades) with prompt message to allow the software/game in question to run,no big deal,click allow or cancel.

AGP cards is a different story according to your link,AMD cards are fine and it seems to be only with Via /Nvidia AGP combo,my best guess is some sort of conflict between the two,however its not Vista's fault.

How about the opposite end? My laptop is a 1.6Ghz Celeron M, 1gb ram, Intel 945 graphics. Runs like a charm. It obviously can't play games, but it does everything else ok. If vista causes your system to lag, it means your system is a piece of crap from 10 years ago.

Agreed. Vista is mind-blowingly fast on my opteron box and on my Celeron M 440 laptop with 1GB of ram and Intel 945 chipset, it, like you, runs like a charm. In fact it often surprises me with its responsiveness and performance.

4) Where do you see me complaining about lag? Maybe the exception here is that I could have a better graphics card, I just can't afford it. It would be very expensive and I have other priorities.

5) How does the fact that *your* laptop runs Vista quite well, should force others to accept that *theirs* does not, without complaining?

6) Talking about games, there will be trade-offs. I want all the performance of my rig, to be used by UT3. I'm not going to let an OS (be it XP, Vista or Linux), drivers or apps, stand in the way of the FPS and image quality that I want or can achieve for my game.
I own the card, the OS and soon UT3. If it lags on a OS, too bad for the OS, not the game
The point of it while playing is being a layer between the hardware and the game. I DO NOT allow it to be anything else.

What I think everyone is trying to say is there will be no performance hit from using Vista, initially there was because of poor drivers however Vista today performs every bit as well as XP.

I think his point was that there might be something other than Vista going on there. If your computer runs like crap by all means complain. When you go to troubleshoot there is a variable already eliminated for you. 🙂

I'm talking about thousands of people where Vista runs like crap. Can you ignore what people are saying on forums, companies, computers bought last year, Dells, HP, bought on non-enthusiast stores, not bought for games, etc...

Many people also have no idea how to set up and fine tune a windows installation though. I haven't installed Vista yet, hope to do that by the end of the month, but I've tweaked XP Pro many times.

Another point is average Joe does not know how to install drivers or even bother to install anti-virus software etc ,I actually know some online gamers(a few in WoW I use to know that don't know how to or even have an AV installed ) that can't do these simple things or even bother,and yes they have had problems,but hey its XP/Vista's fault not the user right???? :frown: .

Even with XP you need some good basic PC knowledge to set it up right ,sad thing is , its easier to blame the OS rather then the user.
Any OS in question is not perfect but neither are people.

Yes I tend to ignore a lot of people,too much FUD and crap out there,at least with an OS you know where you stand,people are a different matter.

Most people that are happy with Vista won't be saying anything,it's like always, only when people have problems or want to make a negative comment/review about Vista,you know what they say no news like bad news.

End of the day only your own real experience really matters,they can be wrong if you are happy with Vista,remember everybodys experience will be different,what's the most important one?..That's easy your own like I said above.

Yea, I love my Vista. It has a couple of small annoying problems, but even if they were never fixed I'd prefer it to XP by a long shot.

From a tech point of view, both in support and for use with my home PC, I happen to dislike 'new' things.

I cannot tell you how much I dread when my company is going to fully support Vista... That means I have to not only remember Win95/98/ME/XP/NT/2K/SVR2K/SVR2K3, but now I get to commit Windows Vista to memory. Now, I love learning and playing with new toys, but the question is: what does Vista offer than XP does not? From the business persective, not much. Which is why many businesses have absolutely no plans to move to Vista until MS forces them too.

As a tech, the only reason I see myself upgrading to Vista is for DX10. I don't care so much for all the flashy stuff and so on.

In the end, I don't hate Vista. I just wanted more from it... They said it was going to come with a new and improved file system. Well, it didn't.

But even so, give me one good reason to upgrade to Vista with my current computer? Why spend $400 for retail vista ultimate only to use up one of my two installs? So, the next PC I build I could use it and bingo, now I lost my ability to upgrade my computer and install Vista without buying a new copy. This was a very crappy move in my opinion...

So, no thanks... So far DX10 doesn't bring anything new the table in real world applications. Sure, slightly better shadows, maybe a few more particles, but DX9 is good enough for me until I am forced into a new computer or OS.

FYI - I have a FULL RETAIL COPY of Vista Ultimate. But will not install it until I build my new PC. I don't want to use one of my two activations :thumbsdown:

I love these rants especially when the posters own themselves. There is no activation limit on Ultimate Retail, you can simply only have it installed on one machine at a time. Given your post, there is NO reason you couldn't later upgrade to a third machine.

Did some searching and found this article... It looks like you are right! I actually read the license agreement 4 months ago and I know for a fact that I seen the limitation that they mentioned here that was revised... Which strikes me as strange... Was I reading an outdated TOS/EULA? In any case, the article I linked too was way back to around a year ago... Surprised I missed it. I wonder how many other people do not know about the revision to the activation limit...

In any case, I didn't appreciate your low blow, to but I do appreciate you informing me that my information on Vista activation was outdated and incorrect.

No versions of retail have this restriction. Microsoft *considered* it prior to the Vista launch but decided against it. The EULA says "You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices."

Microsoft recanted on that proposal in the license and changed it back to the way it was in xp before the RTM.

I'm guessing System Admins will really like UAC, it'll keep regular users from messing with their PC's. Plus Vista has many other security benefits over XP.

Good for you that your Vista is running fine. But just because it works for you, it doesn't mean that it works for everyone else. And it also doesn't mean that all those people can't possibly have some real issue and they are just bandwagoning.

You would be right that a lot of system admins would enjoy that. But, keep in mind that system admins also prefer to keep things simple and not overly complicated. Now, I am not implying that vista is complicated. But, generally, a lot of system admins take on the thought process that if it is not broken, don't fix it. I happen to take that on that mindset, and happens to be one shared by our common admin, who is a genius on many levels. Again, that isn't used to reinforce that vista=bad. Obviously, Vista is NOT bad, it just isn't practical for everyone. Especially with the costs to benefits ratio.

I don't think anyone is bashing Vista for the sake of bashing it. I think people from all sides have legitmate reasons why they do not like it. Is every reason legitimate? Of course not, but many are!

It is like any topic, you have people on both sides of the fence who call each other morons just because they don't believe the way others do. I think people need to leave that mindset altogether, take a look at both arguments, understand both sides and make a decision for yourself personally. Can anyone ask someone to do more than that? I hope not, because more than that is brainwash.

Anyway - Now that I know that my Ultimate Vista can be transfered to more than one machine, I am pretty happy and plan to install it here shortly. I knew I came into this thread for a reason - to learn 😀
