having 'lots of money' is a myth. the vast majority of jewish people living in europe from 600 to 1930 were in fact poor.
for every well-off (not wealthy) jewish trader there were thousands of others holed up in their villages living in dire poverty.
they were expected to occupy the bottom economic rung and were relegated by church and political authorities to a select
few and circumscribed professions.

the fact they were a 'closed off community' is unique in the christian world but not so in other cultures, where jews
constituted an accepted minority (a 'people of the book') and had to learn to co-exist according to the rules set by those
governments. here i speak about jews living in the muslim world. jews in baghdad or cairo did not experience near the
discrimination and unmitigated hatred that has riven european christian cultures for hundreds of years.

That is not true. Look into history. Muslims forced Jews to live in hellholes in North Africa and the Middle East. They were never treated nice by Muslims. In fact more Jews escaped from Muslim countrys then Europe to live in Israel.

That is the gfacts. Muslims treat any non-muslim like crap. Especially Jews.

Replace "Muslim" with Jew...now what do you call that? Sometimes its hard to see one's own prejudice.

If it is the truth it is not prejudice.

If it is the truth it is not prejudice.

If its applied to an entire group of people, it is.

We are all products of our environment. If we are brought up in an environment where non-tolerance is the status quo, we are more likely to behave the same way. My parents always made fun of blacks, jews, spics, beaners and so on. I brought these prejudices with me into my adult life. It wasn't until I was in college, where I was exposed to a diverse ethnic background, where I started to formulate my own opinions. I like to think that I am not prejudiced, but still those deep-rooted prejudices are there. I am trying my best to see that my kids don't view other religions or ethnicities in a negative light. My .02.

obviously, while jews were never regarded as equals with their muslim brethren in any muslim land, they were afforded
greater respect and benefited from the recogniton afforded to them by the quran. this is all vintage history. with the rapid
decline of ottoman fortunes in the 19th century, the lot of jews took on a more secular character as western democratic
instutions were introduced into muslim countries and formerly alien concepts like 'individual rights' were not easily digested
or faithfully emulated.

i don't know of any 'hellholes in north africa and the middle east'. enlighten, moi. where are they ? name some.

jews did flee from muslim lands following the 1947-48 conflict and continued to do so for decades to come. but this is a
recent phenomena that is at odds with the hundreds of years of refuge offered to jewish refugees fleeing frequent christian
persecutions. even in the 20th century, ceretainly the late 19th, saw an influx of jewish peoples running from the tsar's
royalist sympathizers into near east realms.

And because they are arrogant: take for example the word anti-semitism.
It's not the hate against jews but against semites (which includes all MUSLIMS!!)

and if you argue that isreal belongs to the jews because it was once their land you could argue that the whole meditteranian belongs to the Italians (Romans) and all of Europe belongs to the Germans (Holy Roman Empire) ...

I think it's because they have circumcised penises. The majority of the world isn't circumcised. This also explains why other countries hate America.

I think the hatred is based on different reasons. It varies from economics, to politics, to religion in my opinion. One thing to note is that not everyone turned their back on the Jews. In India, for example, there is a sizeable Jewish community that has its roots their, largely due to persecution in other countries (mostly Muslim).

Indian Jews

India also opened its doors to people of the Zoroashtrian and Bahai faith, after they were persecuted by Muslims.

Have to start in Medina. The Muslim prophet himself killed all the male Jews there and enslaved the women.

Well, in his little attempt at humor here (good try, you get a gold star:D), Scarpozzi did give me an idea for an interesting analogy. People are afraid of sharks, and will go out of their way to kill them. Sharks kill very few people; when they do attack, they usually will take one bite, realize it's not their normal food type, and let go. Yet, there are plenty of things that cause many more deaths than sharks, but we operate based on misinformation that is accepted without question. Our parents or peers hate sharks, that means we must too.
Jewish people may have gotten a bad reputation way back when, and that seems to have been passed down across many generations; too many people are just willing to hate blindly rather than think for themselves. It's just easier that way.
(And before anyone suggests it, I'm not trying to say Jewish people are similar to sharks, ok? I know someone is going to make that dumb assessment of this, but that's not it. I personally have no problem with Jewish people, and don't see why anyone else should.)

my god you people butchered the israel/palestine argument.

red dawn - if, through some bizarre circumstance, the native americans managed to rise up and retake the country as theirs, i do not think it would be a very strong argument for americans to say "but we were there first". that is the point.

Fear and ignorance concerning things and people that are 'different'.
And envy of those who do well, although the doing well can at least be partially explained by the orthodox Jewish memorization of the Torah, which trains the memory very well, which in turn makes it easier to study other things.
And nowadays because the Israeli government, which is only a selective group of Jews anyway.

It's a human thing to want to be better, stronger, richer, prettier, luckier, happier, etc than everyone else. Survival of the strongest is in most cases also survival of the most anti-social. And if you have to socialize, then doing so with people who have the same ideas as you, as to strengthen your own view rather than challenging it.

Well, you see bad things about jews every day if you switch on the TV and watch news about the middle east (you also see equally bad things about muslims).

Furthermore I can't stand those jews that pester you with their being jewish. I met a lot of jews lately and after a few sentences they feel obliged to tell me that they are jews. And they make it stick in a very un-likeable way. I don't give a damn if you are or if you aren't but if you pester me with it I will not like you and if most jews that I meet do it => I start to dislike them in general.
