Why do people give gift cards?

Appearances are everything. A gift card shows you thought for more than 0 seconds and possibly even went to a physical store to pick it up. It's a stupid reason, but that's why

yup, it shows you thought about it just enough to go out of your way to get it, but not enough to get something worth a damn.

still, id take a gift card over nothing 🙂

I get gift cards for people I don't know well enough to personalize a gift for, or for people that have "everything". Cash just seems cheesy to me.

Quick & easy for the gifter. Usually reflects where the buyer shops, not where you shop.
Retailers love them b/c so many never get redeemed, or only partially.

Gift card seems cheesy and pointless to me. You got conditioned into thinking money is somehow less worth than a piece of plastic.

I would be happier to get cash than a gift card.

More personalized. At least you picked out a store you thought the person liked.

Also, you could say that if you get them a gift card, they'd have to buy something "gifty" for themselves. Give me a $20, and I'll buy lunch with it for half a week, and forget about it.

I forgot about that. I've taken that into account before also.

I guess no one really cares about freedom anymore.

OTOH, you can re-gift them!

Just make sure there are no fees and expiration dates. I had a friend regift a $50 gift card that had less than $5 left on it because of fees.

Means you have to spend it on something fun rather than just stick it in savings. Slightly more "giftish"

This.

No it means i have to sell it on Craigslist for less the the face value. So your $50 card got me $40 plus my labor.

Just give me $40 and we can call it even.

I knew someone would counter that point by bringing eBay/Craigslist.
Cashing a $50 Visa gift card for $40 doesn't make much sense.

I don't knink I've recieved store branded giftcards in almost a decade. All the ones I recieved are either AMEX or Visa.

I like the idea of getting a gift card. If someone gave me cash I'd just end up depositing it or piddling it away on soda and chewing gum. A gift card feels like an opportunity to go get something nice even if I have to add some of my own money to it. I'm sure retailers love it, but so do I. Everyone seems so worried about retailers "getting one over on them" with gift cards. What do you care if they get what they want so long as you get something you want too?

I like gift cards as a gift when someone knows what I like and buys me a gift card that will give me a fun night out or some sort of fun experience (i.e. gift cards to movie theater, Starbucks, my favorite restaurant, etc.). If it's just a gift card to Wal-Mart, then I'll just wind up buying groceries with it instead of being able to spend cash on something that I'd actually want as a gift.

Because you know where said person likes to shop, but you dont know exactly what they want or you know what they want but it's more then you want to spend.

Feel free to send me newegg giftcards pl0x.
