Why do people get all dressed up for church?

I think it depends on the church. My wife's church has a casual dress code. You see people in dress ranging from jeans/t-shit/gym shoes all the way to three piece suits. The pastor is just happy as hell you showed up...at least that is what he says.

Maybe her church is more progressive than others...

lol. That is true though. ANy dress code is purely cultural unless you go to a screwed up church. There is nothign wrong with not wearing nice cloths to church.

Dedphul - if thats happening, then those people who do that are hypocrites and wrong, plain and simple. The thing to keep in mind is that people like that would still be hypocritical jerks no matter what religion or non-religion they claim to be part of.

Look at it this way, folks - I dress the same way for church as I do for work. Both are out of respect for the place I'm in and for the people around me.

It really depends. Some areas, where there are very few people spread out over long distances (rural and semi-rural) a car is about the only way to go. In cities, where the population is more densely proportioned, bicycles are used more, and they will occasionally get rides from church members who offer.

Of course, then there are areas (usually in other countries) where they won't have bicycles and have to walk everywhere.

But yeah, on those hot days it can be kinda tough.

To a large extent, vanity. Some do it out of respect to whomever.

There is actually a good biography to read that deals with a culture clash between the prim and proper, and the start of the &quot;Jesus freak&quot; era(early 70's). The Jesus Freaks consisted of disillusioned Hippies who began showing up to church in ratty clothes and tie dye T-shirts. The older Church members were more freaked out than the Hippies!

Unfortunetly, I don't remeber the name of the book or the name of the church Pastor the biography was about. Maybe someone here knows?

I have been on vacation many times and attended services dressed very casually. Never got so much as a look or a comment.
